Saigon Defenders Halt Viet Cong After Fierce Swamp Fight

Vietnamese marines battled a delaying guerrilla force for two hours in mangrove swamps near Saigon. Three marines were killed. Submersibles Aid Search For Scorpion Near Azores

Navy uses deep submersibles and aerial surveys to locate the nuclear submarine Scorpion believed lost after last radio contact May 2. A G-2 rescue flotilla and the cruiser Banks, plus the Gala and Irving Banks, sweep from the Azores toward potential debris while officials say the area remains a grim, open search.

Little Pines Disappear From Arbor Day Planting Scene

About 150 little pine saplings planted for Arbor Day on the Portsmouth approach to the Sakonnet River Bridge have vanished after eight months. Garden Club president Mrs Allen Want and horticulture chair Mrs Paul Schule supervised the project with Boy and Girl Scouts planting in May. A construction company cut along the roadway two weeks after planting, moving some trees and spoiling the hoped for green screen for the gravel operations east of Sheroa, drawing indignation from the Garden Club and residents.
