Roger A. Suit an Newport abstractor with Little Rock ties, arrested in Memphis for forging and attempting to pass a worthless check. He carried blank checks, letters from Bloeser Distilling Co., and claimed large business with M Gavin & Co., with a past convict record and a pending motion for a new hearing.

Mob frees prisoner and horse-whips target in Searcy

A mob stormed Jailor Thomas's jail in Searcy on Tuesday night and seized John Pettey. They unlocked cells, removed him north of town, and inflicted a beating with a rope around his neck while firing pistols overhead. They released him and warned him never to return, citing his misdeeds against an officer.

At Wynne on June 18 the Mississippi county delegation split from Macon on the 569th ballot, with John B Driver casting three votes for Judge Taylor and triggering a one hour melee amid fears of a break from Macon’s nomination. The Massing split followed long suspense as Macon led by one vote.

Morning Star Railway Elects Seven Directors

At a Wednesday stockholders meeting in Newport the Morning Star Railway Company elected seven directors: O. H. Jackson, S. Jackson, Samuel Russell, W. Y. Cook, Elmo L. Minor, Joseph M. Slayton and John W. Slayton. Directors will meet Friday at the company offices and groundwork for land options and right of way proceeds, with promoter E. D. Ghadick expected in town to push construction by August first amid optimistic finances.

Skull Bone Removed From Man Near Choctaw Depot

Robert High, a white worker for Joe Bunyan on the Minor farm, was found Tuesday morning near the Choctaw Depot with a fractured skull and is in serious condition. He was moved to the jail and underwent skull portions removal on Wednesday afternoon. He remains conscious but silent, with officials suspecting a head blow caused the injuries.

Rail line buyout talks extend over 300 miles

Newman Erb president of the St. Louis Memphis & Southeastern railroad is negotiating for the purchase of the Memphis Arkansas & Texas Railroad right of way from Memphis to Shreveport Louisiana a distance over 300 miles. His Memphis attorney reports telegraph instructions to confer with stockholders and name the lowest acceptable price. Stockholders meet in West Memphis next Saturday. several are aiding the negotiations though no definite option is yet given.

Lost son inquiry prompts local investigation

W M Gregg agent for Iron Mountain received a letter from J W Spencer of Pensacola seeking the whereabouts of his son B W Spencer last heard at Newport. The missing man was en route to Batesville. baggage remains at Iron Mountain depot uncalled for. Justice J J Martin to aid investigation.
