Iron Mountain awards Newport depot contract to Stewart Brothers

General Manager Russell Harding announces Newport’s Stewart Brothers bid of 9470 dollars for a pressed brick depot 135 by 30 feet with Bedford and Carthage stone trim. The building is slated for completion by mid September, with material orders to start immediately and a plan to remove the old depot to the park site.

Horse thieves arrested in county. two in custody

Sheriff R W Bandy brought two men to town after a horse theft from H Johnson near Mrs Celia Tucker's home below White River bridge. They face charges and a preliminary hearing is set for tomorrow in the city.

Dance at Hazel Hotel Draws Year’s Best Attendance

The Hazel Hotel hosted the most attended dance of the year on Wednesday night with near-total participation from the younger social set and many older attendees. The colored orchestra provided music as the event extended late into the evening. Notable attendees included Misses Marille Dillard Claire Johnson Mary Laird and others along with Mesdames D. Terry L. J. Sells L. Hirsch and Messrs F. P. Skipwith John Prewitt Frank Gullette and several more local residents.

Herron’s Assaulters Arrested In Evansville Case

The ringleader of the gang that assaulted and robbed M. W. Herron at his Memphis liquor house on January 19, 1901 is held in Evansville Indiana for Kentucky federal authorities. Identified by Herron as Charles Morris alias Meyers, he may be brought to Memphis for trial soon.

Steamer Liberty Sold to Hansler for 4400

The steamer Liberty, involved in recent litigation, was sold by the U S District Court to John Hansler for 4400. Marshal Baker delivered the bill of sale, with Hansler planning to operate the boat after obtaining license papers. Potential service routes include the Tennessee river trade between Paducah and East Point or Danville and East Point.
