Newell FFA Honors Through 1960s With Tragedy and Triumph
Newell FFA and 4 H groups dominated state contests from 1953 to 1958 with top honors at Spencer County Fair and Sac City Waterloo events. A 1954 Missouri trip ended in the drowning of Dean Larsen, while leaders like Harlan Gutz, Royce Larsen, Walter Christensen and others earned state and Iowa Degrees. The Mirror notes the program as a top vocational agriculture force, producing state officers, awards, and ongoing community service and scholarships.
