Newell Catholic Church and Early Community Life
From 1870 to 1915 Catholic families formed Newell’s early fabric, meeting in homes before a mission church built in 1882 on Second and Harrison. A 1890s boom saw grand houses and a 22 room Parker mansion, a large driving park and races, then decline as parishes shifted to Storm Lake or Fonda by 1915. The community aided each other, gravesite care waned, and notable families and landmarks colored local history.
