Aris, daughter of the late gate Bea Mary J. Davis, died after a long illness on Nathrddy at age 55. The funeral arrangements with her Bromher Green Davis on Green' street were to be held this after- Wes spubhs.
A still alarm summoned Hose 1 to Captain William Holker’s residence on Orange Street this forenoon. The damage was slight.
The Newburyport Lodge No. 909 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks held its annual memorial services at the Savoy theatre with over 100 members attending. Exalted Ruler Leonard S. Davis presided as the stage was set with lodge-room decor and photos of seven absent brothers displayed before a large audience. The program featured a quartet, odes, prayers, memorial addresses by Rev Moss Wolfe, and readings including Thanatopsis and Lead Kindly Light, ending with a solemn memorial address on mortality and eternal life.
A powder mill at the Ameri can powder company plant in South Acton exploded on Saturday evening, killing Thomas Carey aged 52 and leaving Thomas Waterhouse missing and later found dead. Carey’s family and Waterhouse’s wife mourn the tragedy as the severest blast felt in Maynard, with the cause uncertain though powder mill explosions are uncommon yet not unheard of.
Saturday afternoon the Jackman school defeated Kelley 17 to 6 in a basketball game. Jackman lineup included Leon Noyes Arthur Heagan James Clayton Frank Nourse John Tatterfield. Kelley listed Joe Kaillion J James Walter Golden Joe Johnson and George Tarbox.
Bridget Maria Clav died this morning at her Salisbury home after a long illness. Undertaker J J Connor conveyed the body to the home of Mrs. Ellen A Collins at 23 Purchase Street for the burial arrangements to be made.
A lobster boat from Portland bound for Gloucester, engine failed, was rescued at 5 am by Captain Maddock and crew of Newburyport Life Saving Station. Two men Wasson and Perring, exhausted by cold, joined the voyage after rations and sail rigged. A southeast gale and heavy surf marked the roughest day of the year with wreckage reported along Plum Island and nearby beaches.
State association president Ole B. Peterson of Roxbury visited the Newburyport NA FB S chapter Saturday evening and gave a lecture on Leaks in the Engine Room. State Secretary James H. Sumner of Cambridge accompanied him while Vice President Michael Haley presided. The meeting was well attended and valued by all attendees.
The forecast calls for rain or snow across New England on Monday and likely Tuesday. Expect warmer conditions Monday followed by cooler weather Tuesday with strong east winds. Also notes a storm over New York moving eastward with high southerly winds diminishing and shifting to westerly tonight.
