Julia Ward Howe dies at 91 in Rhode Island home
Julia Ward Howe, author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, died last Monday at her Middleton Rhode Island summer home at age 91. Born in New York in 1819, she married Samuel Gridley Howe in 1843 and raised six children.

New Chehalem apple from Ridgeway seedling discovered on Chehalem Mountain
E B Ridgeway of a Chehalem Mountain ranch visited town with apples grown from a wild seedling found on his land. The fruit resembles a russeted Rhode Island Greening, is very large, with samples weighing up to 3.5 pounds and measuring 13 1 4 by 14 inches. Ridgeway calls it the Chehalem, notes good keeping and cooking use, and plans wider propagation for testing.
