Salem dealers import eight rail cars weekly of rolled barley and other feeds from Eastern Oregon to ease oats scarcity. Barley costs 27 dollars a ton versus oats at 30, with farmers buying chop, bran and shorts at 20 to 23 dollars. Local farmers have grain but lack surplus to sell, while fruitgrowers, hopgrowers and stockmen buy heavily as winter approaches.
