Early Saturday at six o clock a crowds inspection reveals Earl M Hardwick drowned from the Eugene steamer while performing night watch duties. He stepped from the boat with a lantern, vanished beneath the water, and his body was recovered at noon after a search. An inquest found the death accidental and due to misfortune. He was eighteen, an orphan and sole support of an elderly grandmother, praised for his industrious and gentlemanly conduct.
