Oregon voters are urged to approve a two mill levy for elementary schools. The measure promises equalization, increased state support, and seeks to attract teachers amid shortages and high living costs.

Special memorial services will be held next Sunday morning at the Methodist church with members of G A R the Women's Relief Corps the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary attending in body A cordial invitation is extended for all to join in the services.
The A. Rupert Company Inc reports on a plan to secure berry pickers after the government employment bureau closed. Mrs. L. V. Scott would charge 50 cents per picker for arrangements, with growers paying the same to secure a quota, refunds offered if quotas are unmet, and orders sent by check to Mrs. Scott at Mallory Hotel Portland.
The Salem conference session sent the Free Methodist Church back to Newberg for another year. Services are Sunday school at 10 a.m. preaching at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Prayer meeting Wednesday at 8 p.m. Class meetings led by G. G. Edwards on Friday and cottage prayer meetings Tuesdays at 8. W. N. Coffee is pastor.
Emmett W. Rosman, 62, president of United Auto Bus Co which runs Newberg to Portland service, shot himself at his Portland home after worrying over finances. A note said he intended to kill his secretary L Brown who missed an appointment. He asked for cremation and ashes cast to the winds or sea.
The Newberg Commercial Club held a banquet at the Imperial dining room with toastmasters from Pacific College and local firms. Members praised the A. Rupert Company Inc. for operating a Newberg cannery that supports growers and pledged moral and financial support to sustain prosperity in the fruit industry.

Margaret Biggs born December 13, 1852 in Vermilion County married John Shires January 24, 1869. They moved to Oregon in 1892 and lived near Newberg until her death May 13, 1920 at Chehalem Center. She had two sons. she was a lifelong Christian and Chehalem Friends Church member.
A large gathering celebrates the fifty year marriage of Jesse and Mary E. K. Edwards at the Friends church. E H Woodward recalls family pioneer years in Oregon as friends present fifty gold dollars. Sons Clarence J. Edwards Walter F. Edwards Oran K. Edwards attend with wives and many relatives.
The college music department presents closing recitals May 24 and 31 at Wood-Mar Hall. Free to the public, the May 24 program features advanced pupils Lyra Miles Eva Moore Mary Jones on piano Eva Miles Palmer Hayes on voice and Glenn Taylor on violin. The May 31 recital will be a general program with varied performances.
The Standard Oil Co. rationing gasoline across districts and other oil firms are doing likewise in many localities. Director Van H Manning from the Bureau of Mines warns consumption grows faster than production, urging motorists to economize. Oregon’s specific gravity law worsens the squeeze. Standard Oil of Newberg expects a new supply in about a week.
