Captain Mann describes a fast long low craft with a large funnel believed to be an English destroyer, firing a rocket and flashing signals as it moved east. Five Die In Fight Off Cardenas Naval Action

America's first death in the Cuba coast engagement comes as the torpedo boat Winslow suffers five dead and five wounded after an 85 minute battle near Cardenas. The Winslow, aided by the gunboat Wilmington and the tug Hudson, bore the brunt of the exchange before retreating. several sailors named Worth Bagley and John Varveres are among the fallen with others wounded.
