A weekly survey notes the Manila cable end aboard an American war vessel and reports a blown Spanish bombardment of San Juan. It cites British Rome dispatches on a possible U S voice in Philippine affairs, a Chicago boarding house fire with deaths, and Dewey orders to destroy Spanish ships.
Broad reports describe American and Spanish movements in Caribbean waters. The text notes the bombardment of forts near San Juan and the seizure of ships and supplies while detailing Edwards and other officers as well as a Spanish counterattack and the status of the Winslow during a naval engagement off Cuba.
The gang that robbed the Santa Fe train near Oro Grand California has been jailed. The Yukon region features wide rivers with many stretches twenty miles across at distances of seven to eight hundred miles from the sea. Col. William Ayers died in Philadelphia and was noted as the first union prisoner exchanged during the rebellion.
Rear Admiral Sampson with nine warships arrived before San Juan before sunrise. The battleship Iowa fired the first shot and the Indiana joined, soon reducing Morro fortress to ruins as Rita the Spanish steamer was captured by Yale.
The British steamer Menantic reports two torpedo boats passed near Nantucket Shoals on May 11 at 40 50 N 68 W. Captain Mann describes a fast long low craft with a large funnel believed to be an English destroyer, firing a rocket and flashing signals as it moved east. The Menantic docked at Nantucket lightship to file the report.
America's first death in the Cuba coast engagement comes as the torpedo boat Winslow suffers five dead and five wounded after an 85 minute battle near Cardenas. The Winslow, aided by the gunboat Wilmington and the tug Hudson, bore the brunt of the exchange before retreating. several sailors named Worth Bagley and John Varveres are among the fallen with others wounded.
May 14 reports from Madrid say Senor Moret and Senor Gullen and Count Xiquena may resign. A new Sagasta ministry is outlined with Groizard, Aunon, Romero Giron, and the Duke of Veragua. Havana dispatches confirm an eight hour American repulse at Cienfuegos and Cuban enthusiasm. Also, Jack McDonald dies by carbolic acid after sentence in Canyon City jail. Halifax reports Captain Brunnest’s Sophia Rickmers chased by a Spanish torpedo-boat. three shells fired but the ship escaped to New York.
May 17 report from Cavite says Admiral Dewey maintains a strict blockade and believes Manila will surrender soon. He notes Manila is short of provisions while observers from British, French, German and Japanese ships watch the action. Dewey claims Manila could be taken at any moment and cites rebels hemming the city in by land with no demonstrated assault yet.
Reports from Key West May 17 describe Havana's dire conditions under the blockade. Fishermen hungry for bread rather than money reveal starvation and mass reconcentrations in suburbs and along lines with vultures feeding on corpses.
A Havana dispatch reports three American warships bombard Cardenas on May 17. The bombardment hit the British consulate and Americans attempted a landing while cannon fire raged. Spaniards deployed on the shore answered with heavy fire, wounding seven Spaniards and inflicting sharp losses on the enemy.
