Oregon Growers Seek Higher Prune Prices and Broccoli Plantings

The Oregon Growers Cooperative reports prunes at nine cents a pound for 40-50 size, with attempts to raise prices on smaller sizes. California markets are stripped of small prunes, while Northwest holds most 40-50s. Crop prospects show losses in hillside orchards due to late blossoming and weather. The association plans to handle broccoli on 500+ acres next season with seed allocations across Willamette Valley districts. In past season the group sold 27,514 crates of broccoli and expanded to 38 markets. Oregon prunes continue to find strong demand in Europe with London purchasing over 100,000 pounds last week and totals of 411,000 pounds to London and 419,050 to Liverpool this winter.
