At a Monday city council session four paving bids were opened. Residents favored Warren Construction Co to lay Bitulithic paving at 1.70 per square yard plus a five year street maintenance clause. Work to begin within thirty days with no traffic disruption during paving.
The Civic Improvement club's Rose Show committee works to surpass previous years with a June 8 event. A July 4 celebration has been set aside to focus energy on the Rose Show. This year includes a baby show and parade with judging classes for all ages.
In Hotel Elberton McMinnville Rev H W Jones weds Kenneth R Chase to Miss Josie Rich. The bride wears embroidered gown with pink and white carnation bouquet. Best man Chandos Chase. Guests include Mrs M P Rich and others. couple to reside at Eleventh and Chehalem after May 15.
A Boise endorsement from Ex Mayor James A. Pinney praises bitulithic pavement after six years of use. He notes minimal wear and repairs, smooth icy traction for horses, and higher initial cost but long term savings, recommending installation to other cities.
Next Sabbath the Methodist Episcopal Church invites all to attend at 11 a.m. for The Glory and Achievements of Great and Good Women and at 8 p.m. for The Long Journey to Church and the Result of It.
Rev H H Keim and Rev Hen ry Brubaker left here Wednesday morning on a trip to Lincoln County.
The Prohibition county convention in Newberg on April 4 1912 nominated N C Christenson and Curtis P Coe for Representatives from the 13th district, A F Hauser for County Commissioner, Fred W Hutchcroft for Sheriff, W S Fender for County Clerk, S E Launer for Assessor, H C Peterson for Treasurer, T E Miles for Surveyor. Other offices had no nominations. The ticket spans multiple towns with candidates noted as men of standing.
The Newberg Apple Growers Union met in the Commercial Club rooms last Saturday at 2. W S Allan gave a talk on spray ing focusing on summer sprays for apples and pears. He demonstrated spraying with reed and nozzle and urged arsenical spray before the embryo apple calyx closes. Allan uses a boiled lime sulphur solution and stronger winter sprays and advises growers to prepare their own spray rather than pay freight on water. A fair number of growers attended and showed interest. Regular meetings were set for 2 o'clock on the first Saturday of each month at the Commercial Club rooms with a cordial welcome to all interested.
A Red Cross Nurse is killed in a Turkish engagement near Tripoli. Her lover, an Italian lieutenant, discovers her body and fires on the town from an airplane, which is shot down. Both are buried with honors as their romance ends amid battle scenes. The film plays Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11.
A Highland church gathering in Salem Oregon Friday May 3 discussed building plans for a new or enlarged church. The pastor's sister announced the engagement of N Blanche Ford to Sanford J Pickering of Greenleaf Idaho, with a June 5 1912 wedding at Highland church. After marriage Miss Ford will remain in Salem.
A surprise party at Guy Grames of Dundee celebrated his thirty third birthday on May 3 hosted by Mrs. Grames. A luncheon of ice cream cake and sandwiches was served and attendees included multiple local families and friends. The evening featured games and socializing.
A 1912 circuit court list shows judges and juries set to try numerous damage actions starting June 3. Cases include burning timber land alleged from a spark from Sheridan Lumber Co engine, liquor sale by sample, road opening damages, and personal injury claims near McMinnville and Unionvale. Several new suits filed await September trial.
Preparations for a chicken pie dinner on Friday May 17 at the Chris tenson and Larkin building corner First and Blaine streets. Twelve tables represent birth months. 35 cent admission to view decorations and dine. Proceeds fund cement walks at Pacific College. doors open 5 30 for clerks and community guests.
Mrs. S. P. Wallace has returned from Hood River after traveling there due to the illness of her daughter Mrs. L. C. Sims.
The Friends church holds its quarterly meeting next weekend with reports from all departments. A temperance session Saturday evening features college students competing in speaking. Sunday evening focuses on the missionary committee program led by Pres. Pennington and entrees by Mrs. Crozer, Mary Pennington, and a girls chorus. Saturday service begins at 10 30 AM.
A mass meeting of taxpayers and legal voters of Newberg and vicinity is set for the Newberg Commercial Club parlors on Good Roads day Saturday May 11 at 2 30 P M Farmers are especially invited. Governor West designates the day for discussing good roads petitions and related local matters.
Colfax starts grading and curb work on Main Street south end ahead of paving. The street is to be paved from the Catholic church to the courthouse within two months, with a rough surface at the south end to reduce slipperiness. The Warren Construction Company will add the feature at no extra charge.
