A Ruth Sterry verse evokes mercy of nature and a wish for spring. The speaker longs for softer air and light after winter’s harsh winds and dark skies, dreaming of lilies, gold, and shimmering lights on land and sea as gentle renewal begins.
The May day program opened with Walter Miles proclaiming the labor taboo before students as Miss Mabelle Gardner was crowned queen. Flower girls Lois Wilson, Margaret Hodson, Ila Spaulding, Narcissa Bradley and six maids of honor accompanied the procession. Athletic trials selected the next college team for the Pacific University meet while a new 118 foot flag pole was raised. The day also featured a piano duet, a May pole drill, and varied readings and notices including a poetic piece on domestic life and upcoming Exposition events chaired by Clark and Commissioner Johnson.
