Vera confronts Dysart on the beach about marriage plans as their tense exchange escalates. Grunch rushes in with a ghost sighting of Michael Sedley, shocking Dysart who recalls his vendetta and the hidden truth behind Sedley’s fate.
In a tense confrontation Dysart demands five thousand pounds for silence threatening Sedley. Peyton and Sedley, compelled by fear, plan a rendezvous at the ruin to settle the debt. They discover Sedley’s murder of Dysart’s ally and move to avert scandal by hiding the bodies and sheltering the dying stranger.
In the garden at night Tom Peyton enters the ruined house to fetch a letter from Griselda. Inside, Dysart confronts a stranger and strikes. Peyton interrupts the deadly act, enraged, as Dysart collapses onto the victim and he flees into the garden in panic.
