Why lime helps some soils and not others
Farmers of acid soils wonder why liming boosts yields on some soils but not others. O A C experiment chemists report that lime effects tie to calcium humus formations and soil solution composition. They note nitrates rise in responsive soils, soluble potassium rises with calcium sulfate, calcium stays constant, phosphorus declines slightly, and sulfofication occurs with carbonate and oxide forms. Drainage and organic matter should precede liming. conduct local lime trials to decide usage.
