Attempted assassination of King George in royal carriage

An unsuccessful gun attack targeted King George and Princess Maria as they rode from Phaleron. A footman was wounded in the arm, horses were shot at, and the king identified a young assailant about 20 years old while the pair escaped to the palace unhurt.

Rotterdam Recovers Overdue Liner La Champagne Castaways

The Holland America Line steamer Rotterdam arrived at quarantine with nine La Champagne crew and Third Officer George Uneworth rescued from a lifeboat after six days afloat. La Champagne, with 304 passengers, broke its tail-end shaft near 45.27 N 61.52 W on February 17 and was overdue by almost two weeks. Captain Perrott sent a lifeboat for help near the Newfoundland banks.

Burned at Sea on Legisator Aboard Steamer Legisator

The British steamer Legislator bound from Liverpool to Colon burned February 15 through 16 after leaving Liverpool. Fireman Thomas Roberta died from burns. Second Officer James Bateman and Seaman William Angell drowned when a boat capsized. Remaining crew of 30 and two passengers Dr Mortimer and wife were rescued by the Flowergate and arrived in port. Four engineers were severely injured and hospitalized. Holden not expected to live.

Seven Young People Killed In Illinois Train Collision

An omnibus carrying nine people including eight young men and women was struck by a Grand Trunk passenger train at the Western Avenue crossing south of Blue Island. The collision occurred at 9 o clock, killing six almost instantly and leaving all others with serious injuries. The train was speeding and approached the crossing after a sharp curve.
