James J. Jeffries arrived from the West to defeat Robert Fitzsimmons at Coney Island Athletic Club in 11 rounds. The new champion in middleweight and heavyweight classes dominated from the start and never was in serious danger, taking the lead after a strong size-up. The Australian foe was overcome from the ninth round.
London reports a Westminster Gazette rumor that a responsive quarter has proposed the United States mediate between Transvaal and Great Britain and that mediation may be undertaken. Nanaimo notes the Amur reports a mountain slide near the White Paws and Yukon railway on June 4 killing one man and injuring others.
