To Port land and back in winter weather from Newberg
A Wallula letter dated January 22 describes trains reaching Portland after clearing tracks and depots, lack of streetcars, and travel from Newberg. The writer notes seventeen days in Port land with grippe lingering, expects milder weather to improve health. Cold snaps bring 15 inches of snow, temperatures below zero, frozen rivers, booming jackrabbit activity, and fences guarding alfalfa. Mrs Hiatt is very sick with little hope of recovery.
