Griselda and Vera Dysart arrive at the desolate Greycourt estate and meet Gregory Dysart. They discover harsh living conditions and a chilly household led by Mrs Grunch. Griselda senses danger as Vera notes the stern father figure and uncanny eyes.
Vera confronts her uncle Gregory Dysart in a tense room. He claims years of care and resents their dependence, threatens future demands, and asserts rigid control while Griselda and Vera seek rest after a long journey.
Griselda escapes the hedge walls to explore a sunlit forest. She loses her bearings in a green hollow of giant trees and meets a shadowed man bent over an object near a sycamore. The scene ends with a hint of a gamekeeper as the hour passes.
A letter from Lübeck schoolboys to the German poet Gelbel mocks learning poetry and biographies as oppressive tasks. They recount flogging over Gelbel's Hope of Spring and request fewer beautiful poems for instruction. Senator Hanna wears a gold nugget watch charm given by Cleveland Methodist friends.
The Columbia Southern Railway Extension Company filed articles of incorporation in Portland on January 15 to extend from Shaniko to Bend in Oregon and add capital stock. Construction to start when weather allows, targeting completion within the year, with irrigation and timber interests advancing in Crook County and Deschutes timberlands slated for mills.

Washington reports move to end government ownership of Pacific transport service within a reasonable time. Quartermaster and Root factions clash over keeping ships in service versus transferring vessels to American registries and selling them. Secretary seeks authority to contract and use ships for war transport if needed.
The plan proposes a Bend area extension about 100 miles with branches to Ashwood and Prineville. Authorized capital stock is 1 million dollars. The route starts at Shaniko near Columbia Southern, heads south to Deschutes River near Bend, with Trout Creek branch to Ashwood via the Oregon King mine and a Crooked River branch to Prineville.
The incorporators are officers of the Columbia Southern Company with Mr Ly tle as president Miss Enright secretary and Mr Deyoe auditor of the old corporation. The whole property will be a single line from Biggs to Bend and the route is being reconnoitered though the exact location is not fixed yet. Engineers have been in the field for several days conducting the work.
Denver limited train No. 5 on Rock Island suffered a boiler explosion near the depot at Victor Iowa at 5 55 this morning killing the engineer and fireman and injuring two porters and a brakeman. Seven coaches left the tracks while the Des Moines Pullman overturned. passengers remained unharmed. Pieces of the wrecked engine lay scattered for 200 feet and the cow tethered nearby was found 140 feet from the scene.
The imperial yacht Hohenzollern sailed for New York from Kiel at 0:0 o'clock this morning, signaling the start of a voyage by the German vessel.
Washington January 21 American soldiers in the Philippines must shoot with more accuracy. General Charlee has issued an order noting that lack of regular target practice has left officers and men in the division of the Philippines far below the desirable proficiency in this essential soldiering duty.
Three Eastern companies own 44,000 acres of yellow pine near Ashwood on Trout Creek. Mining development around the new town has reached a stage that demands transportation facilities and an extension to move products and timber.
The Portland trade field will greatly extend with the proposed railroad extension. A large part of Lake and Klamath Counties with San Francisco links will reach Portland easier once the Bend road is finished. Additional branches to Lakeview and Burns may come next year, uniting interior Oregon with transportation links.
In Breux Austria on January 17 the Jupiter mine remains flooded after the January 14 surge that cut off 43 workers including the mine manager and two superintendents. One engineer was saved. nine men reentered the mine and did not return. Thirty one victims were married.
Washington January 18 The bill for the recoinage of the silver coinage of Hawaii introduced by Representative Hill Connecticut was favorably acted upon today by the House committee on coinage weight and measures There is about $975 000 of silver circulating in Hawaii most of it in silver dollars
The Senate committee on public buildings and grounds authorized a favorable report on a bill for 100000 dollars to fund a public building at Evanston, Colorado.
Washington January 18 Senator Harris introduced a bill to provide Government ownership of the United States telegraph lines.
The report notes Senator Clark purchased 66 paintings in Vienna for 320000. It also lists commodity prices including wheat, oats, flour, hay, meat, butter, eggs, cheese, potatoes, hops, wool, mohair, and other items, plus a bank dividend news item and a fatal fire in Buffalo.
The U S military telegraph system in Alaska will extend from the Yukon boundary north of Dawson to Eagle City and overland 400 miles to Valdes by early March. Lt William Mitchell arrived in Dawson to receive light wire for Valdes Eagle link and expects completion within 60 days before heavier 820 pound per mile wire is laid in summer.
A Springfield Alabama report says a posse of citizens fought burglars at Brompton. The burglars are reportedly cornered and the sheriff of Birmingham has been asked for help as more trouble is feared.
Ottawa reports 1901 census puts Canada’s population at 5,360,606, up 536,426 this decade. House of Commons seats shift from 213 to 210, with Yukon gaining one, British Columbia one more, Northwest Territory two, Manitoba three, and Ontario and Maritime provinces losing ten combined, net three fewer overall.
A major blaze in Los Angeles today gutted the Rees & Wirsehing block along with Hayden & Lewis saddlery and a coffee and spice house. Loss estimated at $150,000, largely insured.
In Jackson Mississippi on January 17 both houses unanimously adopted a resolution honoring Rear Admiral Schley as the rightful hero of the battle of Santiago and calling for the unfailing gratitude of the country. The resolution references Admiral Dewey's report in the Schley court of inquiry and criticizes the majority court report. Schley is invited to visit Jackson.
