Mob frees and hangs a suspect at Colfax Courthouse

In Colfax Washington Chadwick Marshall known as Blackey is said to have been dragged from the jail by a mob at 2 am and hanged from a window on the courthouse wall. Dakota Slim was wounded by a gunshot during the raid and survived. A coroner's inquest found Marshall fatally hurt by unknown parties.

Cuban leaders to join field with Blanco in Cuba reports

Rumors from Havana say General Fitzhugh Lee will accompany General Blanco when he goes into the field. Senor Estrada Palma, the insurgent delegate to the United States, is said to arrive soon to join the expedition and meet General Maximo Gomez for a conference. The chatter has stirred the city.

Six men buried in a cave at Walter Beach quarry

News from Allentown says six men were entombed in a cave at Walter Beach's slate quarry in Slatintown about 15 miles away. Two bodies have been recovered, four may be dead. Earth vibrations and a distant explosion alarmed Exeter and nearby New Hampshire towns.

Frozen to death wandered near eighty miles in circle

A search party found William Putnam and Parrish Johnson, who left December 20 for 80 miles northeast, frozen to death about 80 miles from Coulee City Washington. They wandered in a circle after a sudden storm as they attempted a 40 mile unsettled route with snowshoes. Johnson was an elderly man and Putnam a robust farmer who had recently been released from insanity detention.

In Havana a man named Ramon Vivesa attacked during cathedral service firing several shots damaging the image of St Peter. Vivesa was disarmed and sent to a lunatic asylum. San Quentin Cal January 8 Theodore Durrant died on the gallows for Blanche Lamont's murder. He faced death with calm defiance and forgiveness, switching from Baptist roots to Catholic rites before the sentence was carried out at 10 34 a m. His plea of innocence stood as the black cap fell and the trap opened.

Judges for Alaska Senate panel may back three judges

Washington, Jan. 11. Senators Thurston Carter and White of the committee on territories favor recommending three Alaska judges instead of one and granting them power to appoint U S commissioners. Train engine rim bursts near Netherwood injuring three

A Baltimore and Ohio line engine rim burst as the train passed Netherwood New Jersey at about 50 miles an hour this morning. Three passengers were slightly injured. Earlier reports note broad riots in Girgenti Sicily with rioters firing at municipal buildings and troops called out.

Cotton for the Northwest expands farming scope east of Cascades

Oregon and Washington to raise cotton next season as part of a broader industrial program by the Oregon Railroad & Navigation Company. Trials will test cotton and other crops in Wasco Sherman Morrow Umatilla and Whitman Adams counties with aims to alleviate irrigation limits and spur dairying and livestock.
