The Williams Jubilee Singers return to Newberg at Wood-Mar Hall on Monday January 20. Managed by the college student body, this first public entertainment of the year requires admission and asks liberal patronage. Further announcements will follow next week.
The C. K. Spaulding Logging Co. has expanded its local yard by adding twelve cars of stock in a month after purchasing W. A. Roberts & Son lumber yard. Two new sand houses were built south of the yard and plans call for painting sheds, adding a south shed, and extending the east shed to the street for full Broadway frontage.
The St Paul Symphony Orchestra concert drew L W Hill and Indian attendees led by Chief Fred Big Top who praised solos by Mr McCormack and intricate orchestration by the renowned conductor. Indians in ceremonial dress received applause and met Mr McCormack afterward with cordial interest for a Glacier Park visit next summer.
Duncan's Hall hosts a Yamhill County poultry show Tuesday with a wide display of fowl breeds. The judging by C. F. Butler is unfinished, delaying winner announcements to next week, while a list of exhibitors and breeds including Orpingtons, Rocks, Minorcas, Hamburgs, ducks, bantams, and Wyandottes is provided.
Newberg High School basketball opened the season with a 22 21 win at Forest Grove after leading 14 13 at halftime then beat Woodburn 39 20 on home court. Lineup included Gause Miller Vincent Slater Butt Jacobson Henry. Next they host Salem High January 11 at 8 p m. C W Easton of Amity visited.
The Civic Improvement Club led by Mrs. Inez Butt reports progress in city park beautification and invites all residents to assist. The group, allied with the Newberg Commercial Club, meets first Friday each month in club rooms. Officers elected: President Verona H Nelson, VP Minnie B Byers, VP Anna McDonald, Secretary Marie K Evans, Treasurer Martha E Parker.
A caucus at Odd Fellows Hall names J. D. Gordon and Launer for mayor with Gordon winning 107 votes to 93 and 10 scattering. Nominees for recorder W. W. Nelson and treasurer W. H. Wharton run unopposed. Councilmen: First ward George L. Kelly and Henry Craw. second ward John Hutton and A. M. Bray. third ward H. R. Morris.
An invitation notes the annual social of the Woman's Auxiliary to Pacific College will be held Friday evening January 10 at 7 30 pm in Wood Mar hall. All members and friends are urged to attend.
Women of Woodcraft and Woodmen of the World announce a joint installation on January 13 1913 by Burr Oak Circle No 13 and Newberg Camp No 113 with total funds of 321 18 to be installed.
San Francisco reports findings from safety committees in ten divisions of the Southern Pacific. Trespassing on rights of way is a leading cause of fatalities, with most incidents minor and preventable. Committees stress safety first, urging vigilance for fellow workers and pedestrians, proper crossings, and prompt removal of hazards to reduce deaths nationwide.
Early Tuesday the steamer Rosecrans, en route from San Francisco to Portland with oil, was wrecked just outside the Columbia bar. Thirty crew members died, three were saved, with no passengers aboard. Winds raged as North Head light was mistaken for the light-ship, sending the vessel onto Reacock Spit and breaking it in two.
