The Newberg council and residents debated street paving options with expert input from Kelsey on stone block wood block asphalt brick and concrete costs. A committee was formed to visit Portland and other cities to study pavement types and report back.
The two college clubs prepare for a March 14 concert with about fifty voices in a chorus. The ladies club performs solo numbers and with the Orpheus Club. A full program announcement will appear later. a public free recital by the college music department is planned for the latter part of March.
The McMinnville circuit court began a session with a preliminary jury. Key matters include the Miller case slated for March 25 and arson charges. Others involve local option law disputes, Chinese property suits, and boundary questions in Newberg and Sheridan districts. The criminal docket may exceed a week, with civil cases needing nearly two weeks to conclude.
Miss Cora E. Cady of Newberg and Mr. F. C. Lady of Sheridan were married by Rev. F. C. Stannard in a noon ceremony at the Baptist Parsonage McMinnville. Only relatives and friends attended. They will visit Balston and Willamina before settling in Newberg. the bride is daughter of C. C. Cady.
An enjoyable evening on February 22 at Mr A M Dunlap's honored his own and Mr George Kaufman's birthdays. Guests included Gree Kaufman Ed Kaufman Jez Ray Dunlap Wesley Fox and many others with Miss Clara Stanton of Portland visiting. A pin and taint scramble prize went to Miss Fox. After 11 they served sandwiches and cake, continuing with desserts for which Mrs Paolep is famed. At 12 the gathering concluded.
Stella Violet Fortune born February 11 1897 Lemonville Missouri died with her parents mourned by father and mother two sisters two brothers and many relatives she was in teacher training and attended the Christian church funeral held February 17 at 2 pm at the Christian tabernacle conducted by her pastor in a large gathering of friends.
The Commercial Club board held its February meeting with all members present. New members were elected and bills approved. The club agreed to lease its current rooms for another year and to issue 300 visitors cards for members hosting guests.
The Newberg unit served lunch to Shiloh Post members for George Washington's birthday and presented each attendee with a small hatchet in flag colors. Rev Ezra Hayes praised the Father of his country while N E Britt, F L Ames, and Mrs George Sykes spoke on harmony and friendship. The gathering closed with America sung.
The Presbyterian church schedules next Sunday's morning sermon on Practising Religion at Home and an evening talk titled A Good Business Man. The Ladies Aid meets Friday at 2 30 PM at Mrs Kopp's home.
The Boy Scouts of Newberg hosted a banquet for parents and friends on February 22. Scouts delivered speeches on topics like athletics and patriotism, with several names and subjects listed. Mayor Gordon and Editor Bell attended and addressed the group, with other local supporters noted.
