Wreck on West Side Line Bottles Up Train at Forest Grove

A broken rail on a West Side line near Forest Grove derailed a southbound train as it crossed a trestle, causing multiple deaths and injuries. The crash halted service but firefighters and passengers rescued those able to move, with a long list of injured passengers from McMinnville Portland Sheridan Carlton and other towns.

Fruit Growers Hear Talk On Pest Eradication

Fort Rock Growth Prompts New Store and Post Route

Silver Lake reports plans for J. T. Rhoton & Co to open a general merchandise store at Fort Rock with J. T. Rhoton of Port Rock and N. C. Balch of Washington as proprietors. A post office is sought and a road petition from the Klamath line to Silver Lake is underway. The Fort Rock area, once a desert, now shows green fields and growing farms near a circular rock fort with accessible water nearby.

Miles Wins State Oratorical Contest For Earlham

Walter R Miles of Newberg Oregon representing Earlham College won with his speech Co operation in Modern Life. He won by 12 points over DePauw University the runner up. Miles is expected to perform well in the interstate contest due to training from two state events and Earlham celebrated with a student parade.

State Election Candidates and Proposals Summary

Voters must study a long ballot with state and county candidates and various measures. Proposals include raising the state university appropriation to 125000, railroads issuing passes to officials, funding for armories, sheriff control of prisoners, recall of officials, expanded grand juries, tax exemptions, initiative law protection, Sunday business regulation, and women's suffrage. Petitions for further bills are filed, including campaign spending limits and Wasco County division. The Oregon Development League spans many groups. A $30 rail fare from Winnipeg to U S routes runs March 1 to April 30, with others to various Oregon points.

Frances E Willard Memorial Day Exercises

Memorial Day services honoring Frances E Willard will be held by the Chehalem Center WCTU at 3 p m Sunday in the church. The program includes devotions music recitations by Elma Paulsen Edna Everest and Ethel Tangin and five young men and five young ladies will share sentiments. Freeman L Hartford will give the address on The Christian Character of Frances E Willard with a note on how National uses the $2 sent from each of the 10 000 meetings that day. All are invited to attend.
