Local bankers and business leaders surveyed share predominantly optimistic views for the coming year. They foresee improved demand, rising raw materials, and a rebound in markets, with Northwest lumber and farming sectors highlighted as positive signals.
In Newberg Oregon a daughter was born to Mr and Mrs George Tanada on December 20 1921. Also in Newberg Oregon a son was born to Mr and Mrs G W Spears on December 28 1921.

The Newberg Berrians announce a Farmers Week Chau tauqua January 18 19 and 20 at the IL O F hall. Free sessions start 10 a m daily with picnic lunch at noon and speakers on strawberries black caps prunes walnuts filberts home economics and other farm topics. The Berrian band may perform and details will follow.
Margaret Irene Hodgin wed Charles Harold Nichols in a simple Quaker ceremony at the Hodgin home on Sheridan street. The gathering included family, friends, and Pacific College ties, with music by Eva Miles and Frances Elliott. The couple, both widely liked, plan a Newport visit after the ceremony.
On Wednesday December 21 a group of young people gathered at Miss Silva Clemenson 400 Hancock street for an evening of dancing and games. An oyster supper was served at eleven. Invited guests included Miss Hazel Sutherland Miss Mabel Sutherland Barbara Morris Florence Newman Ruby Wanless Hazel Moore Violet Clemenson and the host Miss Silva Clemenson.
The Newberg Berrians will elect officers for 1922 at a meeting in the American Legion hall next Wednesday at 8 p.m. A program is planned with the Berrian band to perform, and members are urged to attend to help boost the group and the community.
Ernest Duncan and Miss Barbara Morris were secretly married last Saturday at the Duncan home on West Second Street with Rev. George H. Lee presiding. Both well known in Newberg, Miss Morris is the daughter of Mr and Mrs George Morris of River Street. Duncan will soon take over the Anderson Motor Company garage repair department. The Graphic offers congratulations and best wishes to the newlyweds.
The junior Welatawesit Camp Fire girls gathered at Thelma Rankin s home for a ceremonial Christmas meeting. They sang carols, exchanged presents, played games, and enjoyed Wienies marshmallows sandwiches and chocolate by the fireplace. Attending were Lucile Ehret Grace Heater Eula Vincent Bernice Carlisle Alice Hodson Thelma Rankin Bernice Newhouse Hazel Newhouse.

The event featured experts from the experiment stations and cannery managers with ample time for questions and discussion.
Harvey William Griffin aged 68 died after living in Centerville Lee Iowa Long Beach California and Newberg Oregon. He was married to Clara Belle Manlove in 1883 and leaves a widow two brothers one sister and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Hollingsworth parlors with Rev. Chas. E. Gibson officiating.
J Franklin Babb known as the Sunshine Speaker presents The 100 Percent Man at Wood-Mar hall on Friday evening January 6. Once a New England favorite his talk about human nature and the brighter side of life has gained popularity across the middle west. Babb’s tour includes his experience in France with the doughboys and his engaging, witty analysis.
The Minnesota society will hold its annual meeting in Duncan's hall on Wednesday January 4. All residents of Minnesota are welcome to attend with lunch baskets. Coffee and dishes provided by the committee. A business meeting and short program follow dinner. Mrs Emma S. Hulin secretary.
A large meeting for Yamhill County farmers is planned at the I O O F hall in Newberg to organize the Farm Bureau. State President Mansfield and secretary Aird will speak, with a forenoon film “Spring Valley” plus a picnic lunch. The day is free and open to all farmers.
The Oregon Growers association projects over one hundred carloads of broccoli or winter cauliflower this winter in the Willamette and Umpqua valleys. Newberg, Independence, Salem, Amity, and Sheridan are noted shipping points with varied carload estimates. Last year totals were fifty four from the Umpqua valley and six from the Willamette valley, with acreage increasing this season.
The California Prune and Apricot Growers association raised prices on prunes by three quarters of a cent per pound over opening levels. An 14% cent rise applied to the 30 40s grade with Coast FOB quotes of 40 50s 60s and 70s in the 12 7 8 9 cent range, while Oregon prunes hover near California opening prices and may soon follow with an advance.
A January 9 concert at Wood-Mar hall in Newberg, led by the Monday Musical club, will feature Beatrice Dierke, renowned Northwest pianist. She drew a capacity audience five years ago with a brilliant, beautiful piano program. Further program details will be announced later.
Under American Friends service committee guidance a Newberg drive aims to send a carload of flour to Russia where 15 000 000 are said to starve. Virgil Hinshaw leads, with support from churches and the Newbery Commercial Club.
More than half of Pacific College’s faculty attended the Oregon State Teachers association meeting in Portland yesterday and today. The college reports new facilities, a finished basement room in Wood-Mar hall, and a newly installed telephone in the men’s dormitory. President Levi T. Pennington plans a Chicago trip for church and college boards, while Shattuck leads discussions on intelligence tests in higher education.
The rules require an application with a guarantor card signed by reliable people. Delinquent books incur a two cent daily fine and lost or defaced volumes must be paid in full. One card per person and one book per card. Cards cost five cents each. Non city borrowers pay one dollar yearly. three or six month cards pro rata. A family with one card grants same privileges to all members including the five cent extra card rate.
