Houston urges postwar highway and farm reforms

In a wide interview Secretary of Agriculture David F Houston advocates resuming federal highway construction under the Federal Aid Road Act, creating state supervised farmer credit unions, guiding land settlement for veterans, expanding tenant protections, promoting farm ownership, continuing stockyard regulation, and extending rural sanitation and modern medicine benefits to farm districts as part of postwar reconstruction. He notes road building will absorb surplus war labor and supports informed guidance for veterans returning to farming.

Public Notice on Saltpeter and Explosive Ingredient Licenses

The Director of the Bureau of Mines announces revisions before the saltpeter season for curing meat. Regulations on ingredients not used to make explosives are revoked and no licenses will be required. Fireworks regulations are revoked and no fireworks licenses will be needed. Regulations on platinum, iridium, palladium, and compounds are revoked. These items may be sold at Parlor Pharmacy.

Prisoner Jackson Convicted Of Fraud In Milk Scheme Case

G W James, Southern Pacific station agent, testified in Seattle in the Jackson embezzlement trial. Jackson, ex-president of Logan Commercial and Western Condensed Milk, forged James signature on bills of lading for two condensed milk cars. He defrauded Ward & Co. of about $15,000 through fake shipments and bogus bills of lading. The scheme involved Newberg residents and farmers who were owed for milk purchases.

River traffic proposal aims to reopen Portland Salem line

Co. K. Spaulding urged Salem merchants at the Salem Commercial Club to back a revived Portland to Salem boat service. He proposed merchants fund opening the line and securing vessels and offered a dock site near his Spalding mill. River traffic had been closed for months after the old transport company folded due to lack of patronage.
