Felia Gorsky, a laborer, was struck by a rock fragment at Leoma Heights quarry in Oakland. The piece drove into his skull but he remained conscious, walked to a hospital, and received surgical care. Doctors called his case one of the strangest seen and he planned to return to work.
In Knox Indiana on December 14 the body of Ed Fetter a horse dealer was found buried with the mule. Fetter s partner William Sutherlin was arrested charged with the murder. The grave was carefully dug and the animal arranged to conceal the man s body if opened. Authorities say several people may be implicated.
Washington December 15 negotiations between the United States and Great Britain for a general arbitration treaty have advanced to near completion. Secretary Olney and Sir Julian Pauncefote aim to conclude within three weeks with a five year operative term and a six member court drawn from both nations. The accord covers five year submissions including Alaska boundary disputes but excludes Behring Sea and Venezuela questions.
Tacoma December 15 Governor-elect Rogers issues a 2200 word pamphlet titled Free Land proposing a constitutional amendment to exempt homesteads valued up to 2500 from taxation and advocating abolition of county government with state involvement only when needed. He cites Emerson Rogerson and Seneca.
The death by gas asphyxiation of Mrs. Sarah Cooper and daughter Harriet shocks San Francisco. Miss Cooper is believed to have turned on the gas and killed her mother before taking her own life, amid a history of melancholia and homicidal crisis. Mrs. Cooper, longtime church and reform figure, had opposed Rev. C. O. Brown in a noted trial.
A bold irreverent burglary at F. A. Bock on Washington street saw a rear-door entry and safe cracked with drills and wedges yielding 600 dollars, four gold watches and nuggets. The Queen City laundry on Fourth avenue also robbed of 26 dollars. Police pursue a suspected crew as crime spreads without powder.
San Francisco reports from Yokohama indicate Edith Carew’s preliminary examination ends with her being held for trial. Japanese papers show a strong case with letters suggesting a conspiracy. A physician found arsenic in Mr. Carew’s remains and the accused declined to plead.
