A village grammar school vote approved a special tax levy by two votes to raise over six percent from three years ago. A large audience then attended Monday’s budget meeting at city hall where officials defended the budget and the need for ongoing funding.
At a regular meeting on December 8 the Women’s Relief Corps elected president Anna Bartholomew senior vice president Elizabeth Clemmens junior vice president Anneta McCleery treasurer Crissie Scott chaplain Melissa Nash guard Daisy Sutherland. Delegates to the department convention named Verna Nelson Alice McNay Theodora Nottage Emma Snow Chasie Scott with Melissa Nash Mary Hopkins Bertha Way Grace Hopkins and Johanna Eater as alternates. Installations to be announced and a December 22 meeting may initiate new members.
The college music department presented violin vocal and piano solos plus ensemble strings under Mrs. Hull in Wood Mar hall. The program showcased strong talent with a full house and spontaneous hearty applause as students Wilma Evans Ruth Griffith Winona Smith and others performed. The audience included many from the home town.
Since December first the Graphic has enrolled twenty two new paid in advance subscribers. The list for the first fifteen days includes J. G. Dicks P. W. Newberg welcomes 158 members to the Whitney boys chorus more than triple any other city per capita. At a Tuesday rehearsal Rev. Whitney praised progress, plans a tour concert in McMinnville with 50 Portland boys and others, and seeks car volunteers for transport to the event after Christmas.
A local informal club met at Mrs Russell Parker's home on Sixth and Meridian streets last Friday. Members listed include Mesdames Parker Butt Miller Otis Williams Wells Olmstead Swart Houser Spaulding and Dimond. The gathering started at one o'clock with luncheon then an enjoyable afternoon.
Dundee residents are invited to a social at the community hall next Saturday evening December 17 preceded by a basketball game Tigard vs Dundee admission 15 and 25 cents. Those skipping the game may use the library with a ten cent admission. No extra charge for ball game attendees who stay for the social dance.
Jessie Mae Bridenstine of Newberg weds Clyde Inglish of Portland. Lena Lee Taylor of Amity weds Clyde Eugene Dunaven of Beaverton. Frank Black Harding of McMinnville weds Arta Bessie Hayes of McMinnville. Mahala Olive Deakin of McMinnville weds Niels Peter Nielsen of McMinnville.
A public recital of piano and vocal music will be held at the Presbyterian church on Wednesday afternoon December 21 at 3 45 o clock. The program is open to all and directed by Miss Jessie Britt.
A committee of Oregon Growers cooperative aided by Field Manager M. O. Evans led an active campaign for new members. Forty more fruit growers joined, bringing Newberg district membership to 130. A well attended Rex hall meeting on Wednesday was addressed by local members.
Newberg merchants showcase festive windows along Main and First streets with elaborate displays. McCoy Bros, E C Baird, Larkin Prince, Groth Electric, Hollingsworth, Kienle & Sons, and others feature trees, toys, candy, phonographs, and snow scenes illuminated for holiday shoppers.
A three day conference of berry growers will meet December 20 21 and 22 at the Oregon Growers cooperative association offices in Salem. Leaders from Oregon Washington and California will speak on growing marketing and disease control with experts from Hood River and Oregon Agricultural College among the presenters. The program covers strawberry gooseberry currant loganberry raspberry and blackberry topics with industry leaders and experiment station staff attending.
In 1920 at a Near East relief orphanage in Syria a rain soaked village boy group brings a bare willow branch as a tree. Despite poverty the children celebrate with improvised bells and oranges. Miss Margaret Reid recalls the day.
Eight Newberg students enroll at the University of Oregon with majors in business administration education rhetoric history pre engineering and mathematics. The university reports 2164 total students with large enrollments in business administration medicine journalism and law.
Newberg high school fell to North Pacific dental college freshmen 33 to 22 on the high school floor last Friday. The Tigers staged a late rally in the second half but could not overcome the dentists lead. Newberg will host Lincoln high of Portland next Friday.
