Chicago reports that following the $20,000,000 merger of the International Harvesters Company several member companies order about a 75 percent cut in field staff. Offices will also reduce forces with all firms expected to shed ten thousand jobs.
In Rome on August 18 religious order members expelled from France ask the Vatican to send them to the United States. They are told there are no U S vacancies and language barriers exist. Canada is proposed due to French speakers there, but applicants insist on American posting.
Ottawa reports a rumor that the United States may demand Greenland from Denmark. Disquiet grows as Canadian leaders push to calm public opinion and argue for Greenland becoming Canadian territory by purchase in the near future.
About 30 hop growers met in Woodburn Oregon and passed a resolution fixing the picking price at 40 cents per box. They discussed baling contracting hop rejection pleas by dealers and the need for laws protecting growers, plus a state inspector to oversee the trade.

Detroit August 19 General Alger will make a formal announcement of his candidacy to succeed the late Senator McMillan. He will probably be opposed by McMillan's eldest son William.
Washington reports that Fidel Castro's Venezuela regime nears collapse with Caracas and La Guayra under siege. The gunboat Marietta arrived at La Guayra and may evacuate Castro if needed as revolutionary forces close in from three sides.
Pierre Aug 18 The Farmers National Co operation Exchange Company files articles of incorporation with a 50 million dollar capital to buy sell and deal in grain provisions livestock and produce on commission. One fourth funds elevators yards and plants another fourth funds cash grain on the board of trade. The remaining half stays with farmers via banks to back their crops for better prices. Stock books open to banks in twenty states.
In New York on August 18, thirty two men and boys swore they were taken from the city by a railway line detective and chained into a car sent to Pittston Pennsylvania to toil in coal mine washeries. Two escaped and returned home detailing the lure the armed rescue and the claim that they were told no strike existed and they were needed to build a new railroad.
From Gradek in Vilayet of Turkey a 15 hour battle sees 65 rebels clashing with 2000 Turkish troops equipped with Gatling guns and dynamite bombs. All rebels were killed or wounded while Turkish casualties reach 48 dead and 246 wounded.
In San Francisco on August 18 a suit seeks $40,000 in fraud claims in the sale of mining stocks. Defendants Joseph Hatcilton Brother ton and John Charles Kemp van Ke are named in U S circuit court. Case arises from stock sales by Brotherton and Kemp van Ee in London in 1919. Plaintiffs Samuel Wheeler of London and the Westminster Contract Corporation Limited initiate action.
