Celebration on Tap for Columbia River festivities

Seventeen cities along the Columbia River and its tributaries organize a series of celebrations for Pacific health and commerce. The Columba River fleet will transport residents on the O C T Co steamer Oregona from Salem to Oregon City and Portland May 6, with 50 cent downriver fares and a 25 cent return option to Portland after dedicatory events.

Shortage in School Money Causes Tax Apportionment Gap

S. S. Duncan, Superintendent, explains the April shortfall in district funding due to only a fraction of taxes being received this year. County apportionment totals $41,717.10 and high school $15,415.05, with the levy up 2-10 of a mill. October receipts will offset some, but overall funds are tighter until tax payments come in.

Grand piano debut at college auditorium concert

The new grand piano from Kienle & Sons is installed on the platform and will debut Monday evening March 3 with a program of songs and piano numbers. Prof Hawkins will read, Mrs Hall and Prof Hall perform The Dance of Death, and proceeds fund the piano’s first payment. Admission ten cents, tickets from Kienle’s or Student Body members.

Good Roads Drive Aids Local Road Repair Effort

In Willamina afternoon residents gathered as Mr Allan demonstrated road drag use to improve rough sections. The drag flattens ruts, smooths the bed, and will be used repeatedly in the lower county where maintenance is strongest. Mr Johnson supports the effort to keep roads in good condition.

Chapin hostess notes at PEO gathering in Newberg

Chapter LP of the PEO Sisterhood met with Mrs. C R Chapin on Sheridan Street last Thursday afternoon. A social hour followed a brief business session and luncheon with novelty place cards using old photographs. The city attorney and his wife figured in humorous readings while jonquils and white carnations styled the centerpiece. Meetings will be under Nazarene church auspices.

Revival Services to Be Led by C B Ong in Pasadena

The Holiness Association Hall hosts revival meetings with evangelist C B Ong starting Sunday at 11 AM and 2 PM, then daily at 7 30 PM. Ong has previously drawn large audiences and is described as a sweet spirited man of God and a successful soul winner.

Reverend Stannard Speaks at Wood-Mar Hall Social Night

The event opened with Rev. F. C. Stannard speaking Thursday morning in Wood-Mar Hall. A social hour featured cream and waters. Eric Bolt of Willamette University and Lisle Hubbard of Pacific gave strong performances at the annual contest in the M. B. church. An unmarried contest tasted the fare at a Springbrook picnic supper near the Lewis home. A new grand piano, long installed in Wood-Mar Hall, is to be used in a piano fund concert next Monday night, May 3, with admission ten cents.

Willamette Club Hosts Social Evening and Boxing Contest

On Tuesday the Willamette Club met in the club room for a social evening with a short president’s talk and games. The main event was a boxing match between the president and vice president. Next Tuesday the regular club business meeting will be held with all members urged to attend. Willamette Club baseball defeated Chebalem Center 11 to 8, scoring in the eighth when Mills hit a two on base home run after a 8 8 tie. batteries were Baird and Mills.

Skelton Appeals Water Rights Case to Supreme Court

The city deposited a $2000 check to Mr. Skelton which he refused to accept while appealing to the supreme court. Attorney Van Winkle secured the case and the court heard it last week. Water from the spring to the reservoir was piped, but riparian claimants below the spring argue their rights must be settled before the city can take the water.

Public Recital by Miss Jessie Britt at Presbyterian Church

The pupils of Miss Jessie Britt will perform a piano recital at the Presbyterian church Monday evening at 8 o clock. Mrs. Chas Morris and Mrs. D Kuhlman assist. Admission is free and all are invited. A new Fundamental Music Training class begins May 5 and runs through the summer.
