A mass of shoppers witnessed a man, Frank Brady, an advertising solicitor, shot at his table on the eighth floor. A woman, Mary R B Clark, then killed herself with a second revolver found in her muff. both died in hospital after the attack at the Broadway department store.
At Senate interoceanic canals hearings Colonel Goethals assured the panel that the Panama Canal will be reasonably safe from military invasion after completion. He noted guards at Miraflores and Gatun locks, distance from coasts, and Gatun rock as vital yet guardable. He added ships can pass in under eight hours with room for multiple vessels per lock and the entire U S fleet could be accommodated in Gatun Lake. He requested a next year appropriation of 32 409 763 dollars, about 5 million more than last year due to increased work.
The trial of George H. 5 for the death of Sarah FR Stoedhe, a girl about 10, was postponed to today at the Court of Quarter Sessions. Plume remains on bail awaiting disposition and claimed the death resulted from a vehicle accident rather than speed.

Despondent over unemployment James G McKittrick 52 of 84 Broad street killed himself by inhaling illuminating gas in his home yesterday afternoon. He had gone to Jersey City in the morning to seek work but returned discouraged and was found dead with a rubber tube connected to a gas pipe about an hour later. A letter to his son expressed he was tired of living without employment. McKittrick formerly a post office clerk and later a city directory firm clerk for a few months, had not worked since then.
Police arrested Clara Tee a maid in the home of Mrs. Martin P Tuttle at 306 Roseville Avenue after a year of thefts. A bundle of Mrs Tuttle’s property was recovered as evidence. An anonymous tip led officers to 78 Stone Street where the suspect allegedly kept stolen tableware linen and other articles.
Vin cenza De Petto a 72 year old woman from Van Buren street faced Third Precinct Police Court on a charge of obtaining 41.01 dollars under false pretenses from Touls Williams of South Fourteenth street. Williams accused her of claiming medical cures and predicting a child’s gender with a camphor based method. She was held on $1,000 bail for the Grand Jury.
Three submarine torpedo boats Thrantula Viner and Cuttlefish sail from Newport RR 1 to the New York Navy Yard in seventeen and a half hours beating heavy seas and stiff winds in their class first with such a self powered trip They will dock at New York and then head to Newport News for tests and repairs
In Clarkesville, Tennessee, last night an attempt to dynamite and burn the Hayes-Lory Regie tobacco factory failed. Guards confronted the conspirators, who had appeared to destroy the plant, killing two suspects and wounding another.
Washington Jan 22 government plans a suit against B H Harriman centering on the legality under the anti trust act of Union Pacific's controling interest in the Southern Pacific and other rail lines. The case will rely on the Interstate Commerce Commission report last July detailing the merger and discussed at the White House. Special counsel C A Severance and Frank Kellogg are returning to Washington to handle the case.
J Spencer Osborne of 124 Broad Street told the Second Precinct that at about 11 30 last night two men pinned him on Broad Street near Fourth Avenue and one brandished a revolver. He knocked the weapon away and the robbers fled. Neighbors heard the incident but no officers were nearby. The revolver was not recovered.
William Gray of 4 Division Place was held in 100 bonds by Judge Howell in the Firet Criminal Court on a charge of assaulting Mary Booker with a razor. Gray cited inhaling sulfur fumes from matches as his excuse, claiming he was intoxicated and acted accidentally during a quarrel. Robert Cloud, of the same address, was also ordered to post $200 as a witness.
Amai Dodd and J William Peter Campbell were reelected for four years to the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company board at this week’s meeting. Mr Dodd has served as director for many years.
New York Jan 22 The proposed conference of old line Democrats from across the United States to discuss issues for the Democratic national convention has been indefinitely postponed. A note signed by Sherman McCraiger states the postponement aims to avoid misconstruction as participants do not seek to promote or retard any presidential candidates.
Marcus J Jacobs Columbia Theatre manager pleads non vil in the Court of Quarter Sessions after retracting not guilty. Chief Justices Gummere and Ten Eyck preside in Supreme Court room as Morris appears in person. Sentencing set for next Wednesday after plea of guilty to manslaughter in fatal Broad street auto crash last September. Civil suits loom including $5,000 claim by Louis Shapiro and a $100,000 claim by Jacobs widow.
James Mack of Pawtucket is still unaccounted for after leaving John Gilmore's saloon on Spring Street in January. Police investigate two men Mack followed from the saloon while Plainclothes Policeman Hannon doubts foul play, planning continued inquiry. Mack’s overcoat, silver watch, and his son’s watch were left behind at Gilmore's place during the incident.
Marloes Gilmore a dwarf of Newark Avenue Jorey City was fined five dollars by the First Criminal Court this morning on four charges of assaulting Willam Bisse who stood watching him on Market Street. Gilmore has long been notable in Newark for his stature and says he objects to being stared at. He struck Bisse on the head with a cane last night leading to police involvement and an arrest.
A man accused of insulting girls along Seventeenth Avenue in Washington Street was sentenced by Judge Howell to thirty days in the penitentiary. The incident occurred late at night and the defendant faced the court this morning at Minion. The case references Market Avenue as a location in the proceedings.
An unidentified person tried to pass a $48.25 check drawn on Manufacturers' Bank altered to bearer. The suspect vanished when questioned. The duplicate check, originally sent to Laula Nadelman, was part of a loss cover for a December Unger Brothers issue. Detectives suspect a stolen letter from a New York building mailbox carried the plot.
Antonio Rosso of New York City who posted $2,000 bonds to secure Antonio Barbetti’s appearance arrived here to aid Barbetti. Barbetti, charged with perjury in naturalization proceedings, fled to Cincinnati and then Poughkeepsie before detectives cornered him in this city. Rosso went to the sheriff’s office with constables to assist capture. A Crookdale pottery operation today employed 87 to 90 workers at Keystone, Star Pottery, Burney & Winter firms.
Anthony Comstock testified at Harry K Thaw's trial that Thaw in 19 spoke of Franklin White and other men harming young girls and sent letters naming alleged victims. The jurists heard how Thaw described a house on Twenty second Street as a sanctuary for orgies run by criminal figures and sought warrants for investigation.
