Brown County Fair Opens With Fine Attractions and Exhibits

The Brown County Fair launches under favorable prospects with a large variety of exhibits in a new well lit brick hall. Well Known Traveling Man Dead in Minnesota

John R. Hughes, a traveling salesman for a farm implement house, died at his Minneapolis home Monday morning of Brights disease. A well known figure in Southern Minnesota, he regularly toured the territory for years, living at Lake Crystal and having residence in Mankato. He was married and leaves a family, and was esteemed as a popular gentleman by all who knew him.

Epidemic of Infantile Paralysis Sparks City Alarm

In St Paul the infantile paralysis outbreak prompts accusations against physicians for failing to report cases. In a close contest Daniel Websters defeated Dr Martin Luther College 1 to 0. The lone run came in the first inning after Verg walked Mayer sacrificed, Steinbring wild pitched, and Mayer scored on a passed ball. Both teams threatened in later innings but were held scoreless.

Two days and nights of rain failed to dampen Minnesota's state fair, as attendance nearly matched the 1908 peak while cash receipts surpassed all prior totals by about 16 000 dollars. Reduced free admissions, expanded grandstand capacity, and popular attractions boosted revenue, prompting talk of extending the fair to two weeks to offset weather losses.

Mrs A G Roemer Dead in Mankato City

Mrs A G Roemer of Mankato died at her home Sunday morning after several months illness. Born July 14, 1867, she was a daughter of the late Frank J Wilka. She married Agbert G Roemer on September 22, 1896 and is survived by her husband three young children and a brother John. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St Peter and Pauls church with burial in Calvary cemetery.

Oldest Minnesota Merchant Dead at Pickwick

Wiscus Mina Chas Suffrins, longtime Pickwick merchant aged eighty five, held the title of Minnesota’s oldest merchant at his retirement a year ago. He started the general store at Pickwick fifty years ago and remained its proprietor until old age compelled retirement. Regimental Quartermaster Id. Janot returned Sunday night from Camp Perry.
