Richard Sallet aged 21 arrives from Osterode East Prussia to make New Ulm his future home. He accepts the position of editor of the Dakota Frei Presse weekly newspaper. His voyage from Hamburg to New York aboard the Mount Clay included a seasick death at sea. He faced red tape to obtain a US visa and paid 31 for registration and 9 for rising fees. After landing in New York he faced customs and Ellis Island processing before continuing to Chicago.

County Auditor Louis G. Vogel and County Treasurer Henry J. Berg led a rapid November settlement in Brown county, finishing Friday November 4. Youth bags big American eagle near Cottonwood
Henry Brew of Cottonwood township brought a seven foot wing spread American eagle to New Ulm after shooting it Thursday on his father's farm. The full grown bird, killed when it roosted in a tree, was mounted for preservation. Prisoner Frustrates Kansas Officer by Escaping Sleepy Eye Jail
Frank Miller alias Frank Lawprot, held on a wife desertion charge, escaped Sleepy Eye jail Sunday night after breaking a padlock. A Kansas officer who arrived to return him to the state found the cell empty Monday morning. Miller, 35 to 40, five six, 135 pounds, with a week’s beard, long hair, wore a gray overcoat and cap, khaki shirt, dark suit, and shoes cut along the sides. Police seek Miller and await further word.

George Helling Dies After Long Illness in Hanska
George K. Helling a Linden township native born October 25 1862 died at his Hanska home Wednesday after years of tuberculosis illness. He married Lena Fedje of Madelia May 10 1887 and lived in Madelia and on the old Fedje farm before moving to Hanska five years ago. Survived by his wife and siblings Alfred Louis near Hankka Oscar Helling Madelia Nora Belling Madelia Mrs Roy Ellertzon Mrs William Selivleben and Mrs O B Halvorson Minneapolis. Funeral conducted at Norwegian Lutheran Church Linden township. New Uhm visitor Nora Ouren of Sisneka attended last Tuesday. Farm hand William Reese takes own life in Courtland barn
William Reese, a 47 year old farm hand from Arlington township Sibley county, hanged himself with a rope found in the Zimmermann home’s upstairs swing. He had visited Ed Baumann farm Thursday, then was seen in Courtland village Friday before being found in the Poehler barn Saturday morning. He had no funds, no home, and was reportedly penniless. The body was interred in Courtland City Cemetery.
