State Supreme Court Awards $10,000 Interest in Western Union Back Taxes

Minnesota state supreme court awards $10,000 interest on back taxes from Western Union Telegraph Co. for tax years 1902 1904 1905 and 1906 840 000 in total taxes. The court reverses a December ruling that denied interest and now allows 12 percent interest on the back taxes.

New Detention Hospital Contracted at St Peter State

State board awards contracts for a new detention hospital at St Peter state hospital for the insane with work to begin in about two weeks. The project costs upwards of 75000 dollars and will revolutionize care for the insane. When ready, a new commitment law for insane patients will take effect and probate judges will direct admissions to the detention ward for treatment, cure, and potential discharge before transfer to the main hospital.

After twenty years as superintendent at the St. Peter state hospital for the insane, H S A Tomlinson is chosen to head the state farm for inebriates at Willmar. He will be transferred to that institution within the year.

Freight Depot Fire at Omaha Sparks Wide Damage

The Omaha freight depot at Manka burned to the ground on Thursday as strong winds fanned flames. The office records and merchandise were lost with only car books saved. Damage totaled 15,000 with blanket insurance in place. The building will be rebuilt larger and relocated for more yard space. Superintendent Slaker traveled to St Paul to discuss rebuilding. Nicollet county dairy men plan a May 20 meeting in Nicollet village under the State Dairy Men's Association. Prominent speakers include W Schilling editor of the Minnesota Dairyman on breeding and feeding cattle, Prof A J McGuire on cooperative testing, Prof Geo P Grout with dairy cattle demonstrations, and Forest Henry on silo construction. Celebrate Golden Wedding of Joseph Bier and Anna Knier

Last Monday marked the 50th wedding anniversary of Joseph Bier and Anna Knier. Born in Kostelzen Bohemia in June 1834 and 1443, they married in 1860, moved to Milford in 1868, later residing in New Ulm. The day featured church services, Mothers Society and St Joseph’s Society participation, Gruenenfelder’s orchestra and the 2nd Regiment band, and a rocking choir gift.

Boy Killed by Pet Horse Near Mankato Farm

A four year old boy, son of farmer John E. Davis living near Mankato, was kicked in the heart by a horse while playing near the animals. He died within moments after his mother found him and a final remark named a favorite horse as the culprit. No witness to the accident.

Memorial Day Exercises in New Ulm Parade and Roster

Memorial day services in New Ulm on May 30 will feature a parade with Burgs Battery Company A Hecker Post G A R and city officials along with local ladies and carriage riders. Major Louis A Vogel will marshal with Majors Eckstein Fritsche Buschers assisting. Hecker Post G A R remains 37 members strong with three deaths in recent years and a living roster of members led by J Archard C Biange H Doehne J Dingler and others. A local National Encampment unit may join the parade.

Stabbing Affray Wounds Man at Valley Street Bar

A man identified as John Gewert and ex employee Robert Boesch clashed Monday at Beaders Brewery frontage on Valley Street leading to Gewert being seriously wounded by multiple knife blows. Gewert was arrested and jailed awaiting grand jury action while Boesch was reported improving and not considered seriously hurt.
