Volume XXVII reports preparations for Catholic Day at the Porester camps convention. Railroads offer special trains and reduced rates to manage anticipated visitors from Minneapolis, St Paul, and Mankato. Officials promise organized entertainment, speeches by notable leaders, and smooth travel both to and from the city.
The German Methodist church dedicates its splendid pew organ with a morning service led by Rev. Sauter. A concert of vocal and instrumental music follows in the evening under the Epworth League. The public is invited to both events. The organ is praised for a melodious tone and rich presence.
Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Turner hall featured numerous young ladies and children in fancy drills pantomimes and tableaux winning praise from spectators. The event opened with Babes in the Woods performed by twenty juveniles followed by fifty white dressed girls dancing fairy mazes. The Guild Society organized the program showcasing local business firms with Miss Hertha Weselke winning first prize for her Wends Blacksmith sketch and Miss Laddie McKee earning second prize for Newtha Hardware. Poor weather limited Thursday attendance and a return engagement was postponed.
Reverend HL Isker departs Bethel Church of the Evangelical Association after a year of service in New Ulm area. He delivered sermons Sunday and leaves to join the new pastorate as BH. Bollenbach arrives from Renville to assume duties. Memorial Day parade plans by Hecker Post No 48 include schools and civic groups, with flowers donated for services at General Bobleter monument.
Turner Theatre hosts two German productions Sunday and Tuesday evenings May 21 and 28. Milwaukee Theatrical Company under L Kreiss brings Mr Foster of Chicago and Pastor Brose, with Camilla Maybach and Gertrude Mueller in key roles, promising lively comedy and interwoven Americanisms for a German American audience. Reserved seats at 25 35 50 75 cents. W G Alwins City Drug Store handles tickets. Senate losses in the last year include Hanna Quay Hoar Bate Hawley and Platt of Connecticut.
The annual encampment dates for Minnesota National Guards are set with Camp Lake View as base. First regiment sails from Lake Pepin June 12 returning June 20, with the third regiment following and a home company duty changes under Major John Buschers. Vermont passes a law exempting timber lands from taxation for ten years under state forester rules.
Gottlieb Schmidt assistant postmaster learns his Ulm Wuertenberg birthplace has been sold to widow Mrs Teibinger. The framing building, once a tavern and stage stop named Glockenhutte, housed his father and mother for years. Schmidt awaits the buyer’s plans with interest.
On Sunday May 21 the Minneapolis and St. Louis R R will run a popular excursion from New Ulm at 6 40 a m to Minneapolis arriving 10 a m and St Paul 10 35 a m for 41 50 round trip Tickets good to return until Monday leaving St Paul 2 04 a m and Minneapolis 8 57 a m See bills or ticket agents for information.
