Minnesota lawmakers face uphill fight over efficiency bills

Minnesota legislators face opposition to ten proposed efficiency and economy measures from commissions set up by former governor Eberhart. Health Reorganization Act Moves Ahead In Senate

Legislature tightens health reform measures as seven weeks remain with the Health Reorganization Act set for a Senate special order this week. Dr J J Murphy notes widespread public interest and hopes for timely passage to unlock needed state health funds. Citizens statewide have shown support via a two cent per person voluntary tax, while the prior budget stood at three and a quarter cents per capita.

Cholera scare unsettles New Ulm buyers and farmers

County Agent W B Morris reports hog cholera has been found in 49 of 400 hogs shipped from Bird Island to two Bird Island feeding yards. He notes the source is unknown and urges calm, vigilance, and careful stock inspection amid doubts from New Ulm dealers who warn against panic and misdiagnosis.

Joint County Bridge Bid Considered Across Minnesota River

A joint session of Brown and Renville county commissioners reviewed bids for a Minnesota River bridge linking the counties. Bids ranged from 17 380 to 11 346 dollars. all the low bids were rejected and the smaller remaining bid is under consideration. The project initial funding was 10 000 dollars with additional arrangements needed before approval, and another meeting is set for March 15 at the courthouse.

County Fair to Eliminate Horse Races in 1917

Brown County Agricultural Society plans a redesigned fair for August 27 to 29 1917 introducing numerous novelties to amuse women and children. The board approved actions by secretary W E Engelbert including contracting acts such as Howard Fielding and Helen Carlos and a fireworks display. A loop the loop aeronaut may be engaged. A stock sale committee will fund a new exhibition building and grand stand.

Hart Lumber cashes three yard sale to Simons Lumber

The New Ulm Lumber Company controlled by Minneapolis parties bought Hart Lumber yards in Courtland and Klossner. R. A. Seaman will run the yards here. Nicollet County expects 2000 to 3000 dollars from the Federal road fund and plans to improve roads from St. Peter to New Ulm and from New Ulm to Winthrop.

Commercial Club backs planning for New Ulm and trail

The Commercial Club favored measures affecting New Ulm including support for a Minnesota Sioux Indian Historical Trail from St. Peter to Big Stone Lake passing through New Ulm. It urged improved South Side Market Park, backed a College of Commerce at the University of Minnesota, and organized committees to assist New Ulm band reorganization and flood control efforts.

Water Supply in New Ulm Faces Summer Shortage Risk

State Health official B. M. Mohler warned New Ulm residents that the city lacks adequate water capacity for summer. He noted conditions are generally good but urged adding another well at Hermann Hill or a filtration plant to avoid a repeat of last year’s shortages. If a new well is chosen, construction would take about four months, delaying relief until July.

Community Singing at High School Auditorium Friday

A special program for Community Singing will be held at the High School Auditorium Friday evening. One or more male quartet numbers and several vocal and instrumental pieces are planned. A large attendance is anticipated.

Tax Collectors Report Shows 64482 Dollar Rise in Receipts

County Treasurer Henry J. Berg reports March settlement totals 64482.12 from November tax collections for cities towns and school districts. State share 9036.89. reserve fund schools and teachers funds. county share 14017.66. revenue poor roads and bridges allocations added. Township village city and school district distributions follow.

Turnfest Postponed By Brooklyn Turner Society

The North American Gymnastic Union planned a national Turnfest in Brooklyn for early June but the Brooklyn Turner Society called off the meet for a year or longer with consent from the National Executive Committee in Indianapolis.

Receiver Appointed for New Ulm Brewing Company

Judge Olsen appointed Emil Frenzel as receiver of the New Ulm Brewing and Malting Company. The hearing occurred in chambers as an application by some stockholders. Attorneys Frank Clague and N J Robinson were in the city on legal business.
