City Club Urges Farm Labor Drive and Community Action

The Vatamercial Club hears a Department of Agriculture appeal urging urban workers to assist farmers in planting producing and harvesting crops to avert food shortages. A fund for Capt Hofmeister aims at least 600 dollars via concert or dance with monthly installments. Road work Good Roads Committee plans to improve New Ulm access and adjust projects. Annual banquet debated with possible April date and a budget around one dollar per plate. New dues year starts April first and several new members eyed. A cigar case for club rooms is installed.

Camp Bobleter Officers Installed Amid Weekend Ceremonies

Last Friday evening Bobleter Camp No 14 installed new officers led by Dept Com 8 O Simonson of Albert Lea with Sr. Vice Herman Nigg of Waseca and Albert Bartell of Waseca assisting. They came from Mankato after installing a camp with 14 charter members. A ladies auxiliary will be instituted this month. Simonson, former First Lieutenant of Co I, 12th Minn, recalled New Ulm hospitality during prior service. He noted a New Ulm barber provided him lodging. The Spanish American War Veterans plan an encampment this year at Red Wing after last year’s success in Waseca.

Reserve workers sought in school in New Ulm campaign

In New Ulm the Industrial Divisions of the U S Army seek many more farm reserve workers. Prof Schrammel at the high school will enroll 16 to 20 year olds for eight weeks of summer farm labor to earn a service badge. Last year’s volunteers may re enroll. Local farmers may contact Prof Schrammel to place workers.

Farm Bureau organized in Brown County at Sleepy Eye

Over 100 farmers attended a Sleepy Eye meeting that formed a Brown County Farm Bureau with about 250 members, meeting regulations for federal aid of 1800 dollars yearly. J S Jones from the University of Minnesota praised county agents and urged strong county support. A. E. Webb of Sheridan was chosen county agent, with an executive committee named for various local groups.

Transfer of Major Oliver J. Quane to Aviation Camp

Major Oliver J. Quane of St. Peter, formerly with the 127th Machine Gun Battalion at Camp Cody New Mexico, has been transferred to the Aviation camp at Waco Texas. Seven other officers have been assigned to WesEnnd peer Regiment, each seeing about 200 men.

Marie Lehmann Celebrates 82nd Birthday in New Ulm

Mrs. Marie Lehmann, mother of Paul Lehmann, observed her 82nd birthday on February 27 with a gathering of old friends. A history in New Ulm since 1857, she endured winter illness but is recovering, having survived the 19th century Indian Massacre era with husband who moved to Milford and later to New Ulm sixteen years ago.

Ruhnow objects to premature burial rumor spread

A Camp Cody corporal denies reports of his death and burial in France. He requests the rumor be corrected and notes he remains in Co K, 136th Infantry, eager for front line action. He praises Camp Cody training, comments on weather and rations, and asks the rumor’s originator to explain how they learned of his status. Captain Hindermann visits New Ulm to renew acquaintances. Bishop McElwain will visit St Peter's Episcopal to confirm a dam. Holy Sacrament will be distributed at church with confirmation services in the evening.

New Ulm Store Opens with Expansive Modern Layout

Mr Schulke’s new shopping establishment in New Ulm impressed visitors with a modern design, open spaces, and mahogany fixtures. The store features separate departments for silk, linens, dress goods, hosiery, shoes, and ready to wear garments, plus a large basement with children’s wear and bargains. The opening drew many ladies, with the basement sales reported as enormous and the overall venue praised as a credit to the city.
