Crowds flock to see Ringling Bros circus opening in town with five brothers appearing personally. Event promises Moscow Kremlin tableaux, golden steam calliope, giant giraffe, hippopotamus and elephants, plus aerial and equestrian feats by the Nelson Family. Also promoted are Electric Bitters as a health remedy and malaria preventive with drugstore pricing.
St Peter State Hospital in Minnesota runs a two year training program for nurses including care of the insane and general nursing. The course ends with graduates earning higher pay and gains in discipline, with undergraduates paid monthly stipends and board provided. Applicants aged 18 to 30 must enter for the full course, with a two month probation.
The Brown County Republican Convention met at Christensen's Hall with about forty delegates. I. M. Olsen presided as Sleepy Eye chair. L. B. Krook of New Ulm chaired temporarily, then H. G. Hays was elected permanent chairman. Delegates from New Ulm Sleepy Eye Springfield Bashaw Burnstown Cottonwood Linden Leavenworth Prairieville Home Eden and other towns attended. Resolutions backed Republican loyalty protection and sound money praising McKinley and Hobart. Delegates to St Paul and Mankato were chosen and instructed for Geo W. Somerville for state delegate and for 1 Geo. W. Somerville as a preferred candidate for secretary of state. the convention adjourned.
Minneapolis Journal reports W R Merriam predicts a 50 000 vote plurality for McKinley while Minnesota silver backers aim to unite Republicans Democrats and Populists on a silver platform. Early talks name several governor hopefuls and district contests favoring silver alignment across seven congressional districts with Eddy Lemmen Towne and others cited as potential nominees.
Industrial Parade planned as a major Fourth of July event in New Ulm with floats showing the town’s growth and industries. Delegations from Garvundong Town arrive by excursion train from Minnespolis, bands from Gaylord, Winthrop, Great Western, and Concordia join at the depot, parade runs 10 to 11 AM, fireworks on Jos Weg’s hill, races at Driving Park, and a prize parade with mounted troops from Milford and Sigel.
