Flax Theft Suspect Indicted In Brown County Case
Edward Johnson, a Lincoln Nebr. man, indicted by Brown County grand jury for stealing 30 bushels of flax from Joseph Schnobrich’s Cottonwood township farm in October 1919. He was en route from Lincoln to New Ulm in custody of Deputy Sheriff Herman Jahnke, with a warrant issued after the indictment. The case drew local excitement due to the home scene and missing grain, which was found in six new flax sacks bearing Schnobrich’s name. Johnson had recently served time in Lincoln for auto theft and was slated for release soon before his arrest here.

NEWS PASTOR ARRIVES AT FRIEDENS CHURCHES
Rev Emil H Sans newly named pastor for the Ey Friedens churches of New Ulm Essig and Nicollet moved his household goods from Minneapolis to the city late last week and plans to reside with his family tomorrow after attending the Minnesota District Evangelical Synod conference in St Paul. Regular services will be held at the Friedens church next Sunday.

Death claims J. F. Neumann prominent New Ulm figure
John F. Neumann, longtime New Ulm resident and early business and military leader, died at 1:10 am at his Second North street home after a rapid decline following a paralytic stroke. Born February 21, 1840 in Mulk East Prussia, he served in the Prussian light cavalry before coming to the U.S. in 1868, helped build the Union Pacific Railroad, and established a general store and saloon in New Ulm. He organized Company A of the Governors Guards, served as first lieutenant, helped found the New Ulm Maennerchor, and was a longtime Fire Department member. The fire that destroyed his armory and later his store occurred in 1872, and he retired from active business in 1910 after four decades of work. He left a substantial estate to his daughter Mrs. Anna Rinke.

Stallion mauls farmer. right arm amputated after bite
Edward Hoppenstedt, a prosperous Moltke township farmer near Gibbon, suffered the loss of his right forearm after a stallion bit him while he tried to free the animal from a ditch during road work. The injury required amputation below the elbow after gangrene risk from gas bacillus infection became evident. Hoppenstedt, a nephew of Otto Radke and Gustav and William Radke, was hospitalized in New Ulm with his wife by his side.

Mrs Margaret Hembsch Dies in St Paul at 93
Mrs Margaretha Hembsch aged 93 died at her home 317 Tylehart Avenue St Paul after a long life as one of the region s earliest settlers. Born in Württemberg she came to the United States in 1864 and endured the 1862 Indian massacre ordeal with her family before settling in Brown county and St Paul. She leaves six children. Funeral services will be held at Assumption church in St Paul Wednesday morning.
