Purity Grocery Changes Hands in City

Monday morning Purity Grocery transferred ownership from Oscar Wachter to John A L Groebner and Jos B Groebner. Wachter plans active departure while Groebner's Purity Grocery opens under new management. Mrs John Landhammer recovers from gall bladder removal at Loretta Hospital.

DROWNING DEATH IN EDEN MINNESOTA FISHING ACCIDENT

August Muenchow 27 son of William Muenchow of Eden township died in an accidental drowning after stepping into a deep hole in the Minnesota river near his father’s farm six miles east of Morgan and fourteen miles north of Sleepy Eye. He and August Discher went to fish Saturday night, companions arrived later, but Muenchow slipped and sank while the others failed to rescue him. Body recovered about seven Sunday morning by neighbors. sheriff’s office alerted. death ruled accidental drowning. He was born in Eden township in March 1894 and served in World War I after leaving Redwood Falls.

Company A Picnic Lights Up Fort Hill Park

Company A of this city held its first picnic on Sunday at Fort Hill Park near Hanska. Officers and men traveled by motor to the grounds and enjoyed a delightful day despite morning rain. The event featured dancing inside, baseball, and socializing with their partners amid a cheerful atmosphere.

Moonshine Sparks Redstone Russian Brawl at Quarry

A Moonshine fueled quarrel of six Russians at Redstone near New Ulm led to Peter Kossak being slashed and beaten on the head. He was hospitalized with three facial gashes. The fight, traced to moonshine supplied by New Ulm, ended without police interference as two attackers fled and a third remained injured. Details remain unclear due to language barriers.

Open sheds at the Fair Grounds in New Ulm used as cattle and horse barns will be sold to the highest bidder Friday evening at 7 oclock. Lumber inside is serviceable for building operations and will be sold by the running foot.

Madden chosen chairman of house appropriations panel

Representative Madden of Illinois was selected chairman of the house committees on appropriations last Tuesday, succeeding Representative Good of Town who resigned. Madden won 153 of 285 votes while Davis, Burton, and Wood split the remainder. Davis of St. Peter was a top contender but the seniority rule was overridden in this vote. William Wicherski left for Wanhita, Wisconsin for a weeks visit with relatives and to return to Minneapolis later.

Boy Hurt as Awning Falls on Street in New Ulm

Walter Becker son of Mr and Mrs BJ Ay Becker of New Ulm was struck by a fallen awning in front of the New Ulm Gas Co office while heading from his home to the Wonder Store to fetch an umbrella. He suffered a head bump and shoulder pain but returned home after treatment at Schmucker Burk Pharmacy. Manager J A Kennedy also had a minor shoulder injury.

Flying Circus Could Headline Nicollet County Fair

The St Paul Dispatch Flying Circus may headline the Nicollet County Fair in St Peter on September 1 2 and 3 as announced by Secretary William Mallgrew. Improvements at the fair grounds include a relocated judges stand a repaired performers platform and a new hog barn nearing completion to accommodate crowds.

Macho issues spurious checks shock New Ulm scene

Otto Macho a 22 year old plumber is accused of issuing checks with no funds in several towns. He cashed at least four spurious checks in New Ulm totaling 35 dollars, including a $6.00 bill at Pfeiffer's and two $36.00 drafts at Weigel Bros. A further $15.00 was attempted. Police detained him and his father later made restitution. Authorities question if other incidents occurred in Mankato.

Court frees Mrs Suggett in habeas ruling at Minneapolis

Federal Judge Wilbur Booth upheld a writ of habeas corpus for Mrs C L Suggett of Mirror Alberta Canada ordering her release from Henning county jail in Minneapolis. A second arrest on a similar charge followed immediately after release, with hearings held but no outcome reported at press time. The case centers on Canadian allegations tied to a Mrs Anna Olson and a suspected operation for another woman, Bunnell, who died soon after. The matter has stirred Brown County residents in Sleepy Eye awaiting extradition decisions.

Belt accident harms Ulrich at Lafayette threshing site

On the John Ulrich farm in Lafayette township Chureday belt slipped while fitting a belt on a threshing machine. It struck Ulrich in the mouth, knocking out three teeth. Philip Kornmann was lightly injured by a belt blow to the neck. Both men recovered aside from Ulrich who remains toothless. Frida Schlechtenhausen returned home after hospital operation for the removal of her ten nails. Herman Bubelitz returned home after neck tumor operation. Claude Stevenson visited with former associates. Adolph Luetjen returned home after a week visit with his mother Martha Luetje. Luetjen, a telegrapher at Stanley, plans several weeks more with relatives.

County Bankers Hold Meet at Sleepy Eye

At the Brown County Bankers Association annual meeting in Sleepy Eye's Commercial Club rooms F. H. Krook was elected vice president succeeding H. D. Reed who became president. J. A. Herzog was chosen secretary treasurer. A proposed annual picnic was referred to President Reed for decision. Attending bankers included O. M. Olsen F. A. Krook L. B. Krook and Albert A. Manderfeld.

Paymaster Frank Baasen Promoted in Navy Cruise

Frank Baasen son of Mrs Mary Baasen of North German Street now serves as paymaster in the U S Navy, promoted July 1. He is aboard the USS Ohio on a coastal cruise from Norfolk to New York for special experiments, a move praised for his 17 to 18 years of service and prior roles including inspector of the navy and Navy Yards outside superintendent at Norfolk. He once helped bring $100,000 in gold to Europe to encash American checks during World War I.

Stone Throw Breaks Arm In South Dakota

Peter Juberigan of St Paul, a bricklayer at Henderson South Dakota, fractured his right upper arm last week by throwing a stone into a lake near Henderson. He traveled to town Saturday for an X ray and proper setting and bandaging by a local physician. He is progressing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. Mrs Juberigan has been visiting her relatives, Mr and Mrs George Gobbrysch, in North Broad Way for about three weeks.

Woodmen Picnic Postponed to August 24

The Woodmen picnic, originally set for August 14, was deferred by the executive committee at a recent meeting to avoid clashing with other events. The new date established is Sunday August 24 to allow full community participation.
