Lynchings in first six months of 1921 rise in U S

The Tuskegee Institute reports 86 lynchings from January through June 1921, up 24 from 1920 and 7 from 1919. Among those executed, 34 were Black and 2 were White, with 11 charged with rape. States listed include Alabama Arkansas Florida Georgia Kentucky Louisiana Mississippi Missouri North Carolina South Carolina Tennessee.

Missing Man Baar Seen in Winthrop on Way to Twin Cities

Joseph Baar, longtime New Ulmite, disappeared from John J. Gugisberg farm on July 1. He was spotted in Winthrop the same day talking with locals and said he planned to head to the Twin Cities and likely South Dakota to harvest work. Relatives and authorities learned he appeared well and rational, with a companion present during the sighting. He left his belongings behind and had drawn some money, suggesting he could be safe and seeking employment as summer harvest approaches.

Flood Control District Organizes In Minnesota Valley

The Minnesota Valley Drainage and Conservancy District held its first board meeting with five directors from eight judges. E. Y. Willard of the state drainage department outlined cooperation on a preliminary Minnesota River valley survey funded by a $35,000 Legislature grant, with Halseth to represent the district. Board approved about $2,000 in bills, to be paid from county warrants proportionate to shares, and clerk Manderfeld prepared multiple copies of the 75 page establishing order.

Medical Society seeks reinstate in Ramsey County court

Physicians from Brown and Redwood counties obtained an order from Judge C. B. Lewis to show cause why the State Medical Society should not reinstate the Brown Redwood county unit after it was suspended over alleged disloyalty involving Dr Fritsche. The action follows a prior state verdict overruled by the state society.

Local man Forster named deputy in State Fire Marshal unit

J B Forster, longtime New Ulm and Sleepy Eye resident, has been appointed deputy in State Fire Marshal G H Nettleton’s department and will report for duty in St Paul Friday. He will handle special work initially, then oversee the Second congressional district with New Ulm as headquarters. A World War I veteran, he earned wide recognition for fire prevention work in his community.

Hianesville Defeated Janesville in Narrow Baseball Loss

Hianesville lost to Janesville 7 to 2 as Doc Hamann held the visitors to five hits through eight innings. New Ulm tallied in the first and added in the fifth and seventh while Janesville scored both runs in the ninth. Hamann and Mitchaud were the pitchers, with New Ulm and Janesville combining for several hits and errors across the game.

Moonshine fueled Motley riot ends in deaths and injuries

In Motley Minnesota a moonshine fueled brawl erupted on Wednesday night as four youths brothers David Jean and George LeVor and Leon Thompson attacked townspeople and damaged property. One youth died another fatally injured the town marshal and several residents were hurt. Miss Ilda Hauenstein visits Twin Cities.

The New Ulm city council approved reimbursement of Assessor Julius Krause 245 for extra help in completing assessment returns. The historic cyclone cellar in German Park, a long landmark and eyesore, will be removed after park board and city committees review plans. Petitions sought cement sidewalks on Minnesota street and extended electric service between North streets. relief association report noted 12,678.40 in annual income and 3,432 in disbursements for member benefits.

Demented man commits suicide amid family crisis in Courtland Township

Courtland Township residents recall Herman J. Huse a longtime Iowa transplant and farmer who took his own life with a single barrel shotgun at his home while suffering from a prolonged nervous breakdown linked to World War I-era persecution and recent financial strain.
