Rev Alexander Berghold longtime pastor of Holy Trinity New Ulm died November 20 1918 in Moskirchen Austria war conditions delayed news reaching New Ulm by seven months. He helped found New Ulm parish built the church school hospital and convent and authored Die Geschichte der hi Dreifaltigkeitsgemeinde. Requiem mass scheduled for Friday at 8:30 AM at the Catholic church with many parishioners expected.

Born in Alsace-Lorraine on June 18 1848 he came to America as an infant. He later captained the river boat Otter between St Paul and Redwood Falls before its 1879 retirement. Survived by nine children from first marriage to Sophia McDermid and eight from a second marriage to Minnie Fehlhater, with descendants listed in Brown County.

Tragic river drowning ends after horse tethered across
Joseph Schwing, a German immigrant and skilled swimmer, drowned while attempting to cross the swollen Minnesota River with a horse and cart. His body was recovered Monday morning after a lengthy search. he was born July 25, 1870, and leaves a wife Mrs. C Wild and child Arlene, with stepchildren from a prior marriage.
