Six Improvements Petitioned For Sewer Projects On Nine Streets
A crowded New Ulm council chamber heard nine petitions for public improvements, mainly in the north part of the city, seeking six sewer projects and one water line on nine streets including Washington, State, Broadway, Minnesota, and Washinton between Center and First North. The largest sewer plan spans Washington between Fourth and Eighth North, State and Broadway between Sixth and Eighth North, and Eighth North between Washington and Broadway. One Minnesota street sewer and a Washington street sewer were heavily contested. the latter was stopped by counter petitions. All other proposed improvements were approved and recommended to the council. The board explained a shift in cost assessment from city pay to full assessment of benefited property due to a money-short city, with manholes covered by the city. The board will reconvene January 28 to levy assessments for Front Street work and Valley Street sewers, with residents invited to attend.
