Death of Col Baasen in Minnesota prompts city funeral
Col Francis Baasen died at the Soldiers Home, Minnehaha, from gangrene after toe amputation. His wife and two daughters were at his side. The funeral from Holy Trinity Church drew a large crowd, with the G A R and St Joseph's Society in escort. Baasen, born in 1829 in Luxemburg, helped found New Ulm and served Minnesota in public office and in the Civil War.

Three Indictments and New Prison Sentences
The district court grand jury returned two indictments and freed three prisoners. William Warnke was indicted for forgery and Thomas D O Brien for horse stealing. Three pleaded guilty: Warneke to third degree forgery, O Brien to horse stealing, and Mike Welter to carnal abuse of a minor, with corresponding prison terms. Several civil cases were settled or continued. The Minnesota Horticultural Society published Trees Fruits and Flowers of Minnesota 1900 offering memberships and premiums. Brooke's Chicago Marine Band to perform at the Opera House next Sunday evening.

County Board reorganized and budgets set in 1901 meeting
The January county commissioners meeting organized the new board with Andrew J. Eckstein as chairman and members Hoffmann Peterson Synsteby and others. Bond approvals were issued for county officers, salaries fixed for the superintendent and district attorney, committees named, and several school district realignments and bids announced. Delinquent tax lists to be published in Sleepy Eye Herald, and bids called for Stark poor farm auction license granted to E Gilbertson.
