State Superintendent Lewis Named By Governor Lind

The Ariol reports Prof. J. H. Lewis has been appointed state superintendent of public instruction by Gov. Lind. Lewis, born in 1852 in Holly Springs, Mass., moved to Minnesota in 1864, taught in Wright and Menapin counties, attended and later led the University of Minnesota, earning a BA and serving as Hastings superintendent before his 1890 appointment. The paper endorses his term, notes his alumna relation, and predicts capable service despite some controversy.

From the Capitol: Public Affairs and the Minnesota Reform Debate

A 1599-like column critiques Governor Lind, U.S. diplomacy, and Minnesota politics. It covers tax proposals, railroad valuations, grain inspections, and a push for municipal ownership amid alleged corporate influence. It notes a Younger brothers release possibility, the Altgeld mayoral bid, and Bryan's stature, with satire on campaign expenses and reform.

Fast Mail to Seattle and the Great Northern Feat

The Chicago to Seattle fast mail service by the Great Northern is highlighted as a major railway achievement. Starting January 3, a through mail and passenger train carries mail without carriage transfers after St. Paul, totaling about four days from New York to Seattle. The route uses Chicago and St. Paul transfer times of 45 and 30 minutes respectively, with the Northern Oriental flyers finishing the journey to Seattle without pauses. The article notes Seattle’s rising importance as an Oriental shipping point, its freight and passenger traffic to Asia, and the strong demand for Northwest exports to Orient markets. It also mentions competition with other railways and the broader context of American railway progress.

The Boy and His Trade in the 19th Century View

Burton Cheney argues in February Ladies' Home Journal that seventeen to nineteen are prime ages for trade entry while aiming to finish by twenty one.
