Skatonkel Tournament Draws Wide Local Skat Interest
The Turner Hall skat tournament drew 156 players, with 16 spectators from the M. & St. L. lines and entrants from Norwood Cologne New Ulm Gibbon Faribault St Paul and other towns. Anton Nun and Lorenz Merkle won major prizes as 15 divisions awarded cash awards totaling $200. The event ran from 9:30 PM to past midnight with a 12:30 AM special departure ending the first big local skat tournament.

Four Generations Celebrate Grandmother's 89th Birthday
Mrs. Wilhelmine Alwin, born February 14, 1825 in Putzig Posen, marked 89 on Valentine’s Day. A pioneer of New Ulm area, she and her late husband William Alwin settled after emigrating in 1855 and built a farm on the Cottonwood River. Surviving children include Fred Herman Adolph Rudolph Emil Albert Edward William and Mrs Herman Breitkreutz. 35 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. A birthday supper at Ed Alwin’s home North State Street honored her.

Special Council Session Advances Street Work and Armory Bond Inquiry
Last Friday the city council met in special session to hear the Board of Public Works report on street improvements, ordering grading and boulevarding Franklin Street and inviting sealed bids. A petition for a $15,000 armory bond was filed but laid over, and bids were invited for flying water mules on Franklin Street with a March deadline. A building permit was granted to Henry P. Bastian for a brick barn in the Hornburg block alley.

Albrecht Faces Extradition Battle in Montana Case
William Albrecht, son of Mrs. Frie dericke Albrecht of this city, is held in St Paul on Montana requisition papers. A letter from a Montana sheriff accused him of hiring horses and a wagon, then fleeing with $800 value lost. He was located in St Paul last Friday, and Montana officials were notified to pursue extradition. Albrecht denies guilt and will contest the extradition.
