Brakeman Narrowly Escapes Death at Bingham Lake
Louis Becker, 25, brakeman for the Omaha road, was squeezed between an engine and a dilapidated coal chute at Bingham Lake. He was freed by the conductor directing the engineer to back up, and transported to St. James Hospital within 20 minutes. He suffers fractures to his left arm and several ribs, extensive bruising, internal injuries, and bronchitis. his condition remains serious but holding. Becker, a WWI veteran who returned from overseas, continues to receive care from two doctors and a special nurse.

Mrs Wilhelmina Alwin, born February 14 1825 in Putzig Germany, marked her 96th birthday with a quiet gathering at the North State street home. Seven sons and one daughter attended, with Emil Alwin of Milner absent. The Alwin family, seven sons and one daughter, gathered to sing hymns their mother taught, accompanied by Mrs Breitkreutz.

New Ulm and Mankato shared second place at the sub-district declamatory contest held at the New Ulm High School. Lillian Eyrich of New Ulm won second prize in the girls division, while Conrad Olson of Mankato won second in the boys. Floy Harris of Redwood Falls took the girls first prize and Denton Steifer of Arlington the boys high honors. Judges found the competition close with six schools represented by a boy and a girl each.
