Dr F W Fritsche is suffering blood poisoning after a minor hand injury in his dental office. He scratched his right hand on a rusty nail while working at the bench and developed severe swelling and intense pain in the hand.
A Brown County Journal feature lauds a recent financial statement as the year’s best presented, noting its typographic quality and credit to the publishers. The piece urges careful selection of sugar cured hams and bacon from Stuebe’s Model Meat Market at 118 N Minnesota Street, with a five‑word 5tp tag line.
A fallen woman, claiming name Macklin from Mankato, fired a pistol at a farmer who chased her after she stole a silver watch near a depot. She fled toward Mankato after a merciful warning from Chief Klause and was last seen heading from New Ulm toward the tracks in bitter cold.
Walter R. Haney resigns as chief engineer of the municipal lighting plant after long service. He becomes superintendent of the Warren Minnesota plant, taking charge February 15. A successor will be named by Friday, possibly a fireman promoted to boiler room duties.
Washington dispatches report that a bill allowing national banks to loan a portion of their capital secured by real estate may be reported. Brigadier General Joseph Bobleter and Major George Lambert returned from the Inter State National Guard association convention in St Augustine Florida where delegates urged Congress to double government backing to two million dollars and extend franking to guardsmen. They reported a well attended conference with broad state representation and praised Florida hospitality. The pair also noted plans for Minnesota to supply own uniforms and sought better forage for artillery horses. They described St Augustine as oldest city with historic Fort Marion and a bustling hotel scene, and recalled cold weather on the return trip via Chicago and Atlanta.
Friday afternoon in the assembly room the high school literary society presented recitations declamations and musical numbers. A spirited debate on the resolution That the United States Own and Operate Railroads featured Oscar Boock Viola Schell and John Watschcke for the affirmative and Cleveland Riederich Cora Manderfeld and Mabel Remund for the negative. The affirmative won as judged.

Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad named Geo W Nicholson as New Ulm station agent replacing R L English who resigned January 31. Nicholson, previously traveling freight agent, brings long service with the line and knows local merchants. his wife Jessie Troupe is an area longtime resident. English will remain in New Ulm, taking a grain business position with Edwards Wood Co in Chamberlain and later managing the New Ulm branch. A separate suit against Minnesota Farmers Mutual Telephone Co is filed in Blue Earth County court seeking 8500 for alleged unpaid materials.
