War Revenue Cuts Favored by All Republicans

Washington December 10 The Ways and Means Committee, led by Chairman Payne, reports to reduce war revenue taxes by about 40 million dollars while maintaining defense needs. The plan cites continuing army and navy costs and predicts surpluses and deficits across fiscal years 1900 to 1902. It also proposes removing or reducing several taxes including beer, cigars, stamps, and conveyances, while preserving taxes on wines and certain medicines. The House later passes the oleomargarine bill by 198 to 92 amid further naval ship funding talks.
