Verdict Acknowledges Schley Precedent But Credits Dewey View
The Schley court of inquiry largely finds against Admiral Schley while backing the navy department on most points. Admiral Dewey adds a personal note affirming Schley’s absolute command at Santiago and entitlement to the victory credit. The report criticizes Schley for delays and missteps but concludes he led the fleet to the destruction of the Spanish squadron.
